Phần tường thuật về tuổi thơ của Đức Christ ghi trong các sách Phúc âm được đề cập rất ngắn gọn. Chỉ một đoạn có liên quan, nói về khi Jesus mười hai tuổi, được Mẹ Ngài đưa đến Đền thờ của Chúa. Trong ngôi đền, lần đầu tiên Ngài cho thấy thiên hướng của mình, chứng tỏ Ngài có sứ mệnh tiền định. The account of Christ's childhood as given us in the Gospels is dismissed in a very few words. Only one episode is related, and that is the one in which Jesus, having reached the age of twelve years, was taken up by His Mother to the Temple of the Lord and there, for the first time, gave indication of His vocation, and evidenced the realisation that a mission was pre-ordained for Him. Prior to this, His parents had conformed to all the requirements of the Jewish ritual; they had also sojourned in Egypt. Of His time there, we are told nothing. All that we know is covered by the words:

Các môn sinh nên nhớ rằng con số mười hai được các nhà huyền bí học thuộc mọi tín ngưỡng xem như có ý nghĩa là con số hoàn thiện. Nó được nhắc đi nhắc lại trong các kinh điển khác nhau trên thế giới. Về phương diện này, những lời nhận xét sau đây rất đáng quan tâm, cho thấy ý nghĩa của con số này, và mối liên quan đến điểm đạo:
Students would do well to remember that the number twelve is regarded by the esotericists of all faiths as signifying the number of completion; it recurs again and again in the various scriptures of the world. The following comments are of interest in this connection, showing as they do the significance of this number, and its relation to initiation:
“Tròn mười hai tuổi có nghĩa là đã trải qua một thời kỳ tiến hóa đầy đủ, khi linh hồn là tâm thức Christ được điểm đạo. Cuộc điểm đạo này xảy ra bên trong thể trí (ngôi đền) và tương ứng với sự thức tỉnh các phương diện luận lý và trực giác của linh hồn. Đây là nguyên lý phụ-mẫu, ngụ ý trong sự hiện diện của cha mẹ Ngài.”(lxxxix)
“The accomplishment of the age of twelve years signifies a full period of evolution when an initiation was undergone by the Christ-soul. This took place in the inner mind (the temple) and corresponded to an awakening of the logical and intuition sides of the soul. These are the father-mother principle, indicated by the presence of the parents.” (lxxxix)
