Obstacle II. Mental inertia.
Các trở ngại nói trên được đưa ra theo thứ tự, tùy mức độ ảnh hưởng tương đối của chúng đối với người bình thường. Vì thế mà trở ngại lớn kế tiếp là thiếu khả năng suy nghĩ rõ ràng về vấn đề cần thực hiện. Nếu không suy nghĩ rõ ràng trước khi hành động, hành giả sẽ thiếu động năng và không thể đánh giá được tầm mức lớn lao của vấn đề. Trí năng trì trệ là do tình trạng thờ ơ, chậm chạp trong “lớp áo của tâm thức” được gọi là thể trí, và do nhịp độ rung động nặng nề trong hầu hết mọi người. Đó là lý do tại sao mà Raja Yoga chỉ đương nhiên hấp dẫn nhiều đối với những mẫu người có trí năng hơn là những người chỉ thuần sùng tín. Thực tế cũng cho thấy rằng những ai có thể trí trang bị tốt và được sử dụng tích cực thì có thể rèn luyện nhanh hơn trong khoa học thánh triết này. Với đa số mọi người, trước họ cần thức động thể trí, phát triển sự quan tâm về tri thức, và kiểm soát qua trí năng thay vì để cho tình cảm chi phối. Về sau, họ mới có thể nhận thức được nhu cầu khai mở nguồn sống linh hồn. Hành giả phải vận dụng và sử dụng cái khí cụ này của tư tưởng trước khi y có thể sáng suốt nhận định được bản tính của chủ thể suy tưởng.
The next great basic obstacle (for these obstacles are given in the order of their relative power over average man) is inability to think clearly about the problem of attainment. Unless clear thinking precedes action, insufficient momentum will be found coupled with failure to appreciate the magnitude of the problem. Mental inertia is due to the lethargic condition of the “vesture of consciousness” which we call the mental body and to the heavy rate of rhythm found in most people. That is the reason why Raja Yoga necessarily makes a greater appeal to mental types than to pure devotees, and it accounts for the fact that those whose mental bodies are well equipped and actively used can more quickly be trained in this sacred science. For the majority of people, the awakening of the mental body, the development of an intellectual interest, and the substitution of mind control in place of control by the emotions has to precede any later realisation of the need of soul culture. The apparatus of thought must be contacted and used before the nature of the thinker can be intelligently appreciated.
Với nhận thức nói trên, người ta mới đánh giá đúng hơn về sự góp phần của các trường phái tư tưởng lớn như Khoa học Trí tuệ, Khoa học Thiên Chúa giáo, Tân Tư tưởng và những đoàn nhóm khác chú trọng vào các trạng thái trí tuệ.
When this is realised, the contribution to human development by the great schools of thought we call Mental Science, Christian Science, New Thought and other groups which lay the emphasis upon the mental states will be more justly appraised.
