READING CHARTS
Beginner students often feel over-whelmed when looking at a chart for the first time. The planets and patterns look alien and the mind gets confused and over-whelmed. This can be overcome if readings are approached with a clear method in mind - such as is given here. The chart of Sean Connery is used to demonstrate a simple method.
In later sections of this chapter, five specialist areas have been covered - relationships, career, health, children and death. Once the basic character reading has been completed, if there are no special requests from the client then do a quick overview of relationships, carcer and health. But usually, clients book a reading with an astrologer because there is an issue involved - most often, relationships. Each topic has been comprehensively covered to help students build up expertise when reading these areas.
A Simple Natal Chart Format
1. Briefly, look at the Planetary Pattern and the Mode and Elements. Just do this briefly. Identifying the pattern and dominant mode and element (if there is one) is a way to get the mind working and a “feeling” for the person's character.
2. Then focus the reading around the Sun, the personal planets and ascendant.
- a. Start with the Sun - the personality. Read it in its sign, house and aspects (do this for all planets). It is the heart of the personality and all the other planets should be related back to it. Using the analogy of a car, the Sun in Aries could be likened to a Ferrari - a personality that wants to race. All the other planets are like parts of the engine and interior of the car that affect the speed and handling of this race car.
- b. Read the emotions, the Moon.
- c. Read the ascendant, the appearance, image and how life is approached.
- d. Read Mercury - how the mind thinks.
- e. Read the affections - Venus; how easy it will be to give and receive love.
- f. Read the passions, the desires - Mars.
- g. Then read any of the other planets that are making important statements if they have not already been included in the reading of the personal planets.
Example: Natal Chart Reading - Sean Connery Scottish actor Sean Connery was born on the 25th of August, 1930, in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland, at 18:05 pm.
1. The Planetary Pattern. The pattern is a Bucket. Here is the definition: “A single planet opposes all planets on the opposite side. The energy generated by the large group of planets will try to find release through the single planet. It is crucial therefore that the function symbolised by this planet is working well, or congested energy, anger and frustration will result.“ Saturn is the handle of the bucket in Sean's chart and sits on the Capricorn ascendant. What this tells us about him, is that he is very disciplined in the way he approaches life and what people think about him. No matter what is going on in the rest of his life, he is very careful about his image and what the public sees.
2. Note the breakdown of elements. Scan is outstandingly an earth element person. Three of his personal planets are in an earth sign (the Sun, Mercury, Venus in Virgo). As previously mentioned, his ascendant and the handle of the bucket are in Capricorn, a cardinal-carth sign. This gives him a cautious, practical and pragmatic nature. These down-to- earth traits are foundational in his nature.
3. Read Connery's personality - the Sun.
- Sun in Virgo in the seventh house. Sean's personality is intelligent, discerning and analytical. Marriage and close one-on-one partnerships are important to him.
- Sun conjunct Neptune. This aspect softens his analytical side; he is sensitive, artistic and compassionate.
- Sun semi-square Venus in Libra, eighth house. Sometimes he can be a little selfish with his affections and if so, this will cause issues with partners.
- Sun sextile Mars in Gemini, sixth house. He is passionate about his work, where he is versatile and a good communicator. He likes physical work.
- Sun trine Saturn in Capricorn, conjunct ascendant. Sean is responsible, hard-working and ambitious. This is the way he approaches life, how people see him and what they like about him.
- Sun sesquiquadrate Uranus in Aries, second house. He can be selfish with money.
- Sun trine north-node in the third house. He likes to have a plan, how he can progress forwards into life. If he takes the initiative (node in Aries), things should flow.
Summary. Sean is intelligent, analytical and also sensitive and artistic. Marriage is very important to him but he needs to be more considerate at times. He is passionate about his work, is a good communicator and hard working. People respect him. He likes to have a plan about how to progress forwards in life.
Remember, the chart represents character at birth. If you are reading for a mature person, it is possible that hard aspects in the nature have been straightened. So, while Sean may have been “selfish with money” when young, it is just as possible he adjusted this as he matured.
4. Read the emotions, the Moon.
- Moon in Virgo in the eighth house. Sean can be irritable if things do not go his way - especially in business and in the handling of shared resources and money.
- Moon conjunct Mercury in Virgo, eighth house. He likes deep and intelligent conversations.
- Moon square Mars in Gemini, sixth house. He can be angry and sarcastic if things go wrong at work. He is a perfectionist
- Moon sextile MC. His imagination will help him achieve success in his career.
- Moon inconjunct north-node in Aries, third house. He needs to adjust his tendency to criticise, be more straight-forwards with what he says.
- Moon trine Chiron. Wounds from childhood compelled him to seek emotional healing.
Summary. Sean can be irritable if things do not go his way. He will criticise people he is unhappy with - especially in business and when handling money. In his work he tries very hard to get everything perfect and this has helped him achieve success in his career. He must heal any heal childhood wounds that remain unresolved and learn to speak kindlier when he is irritated.
5. Read the ascendant, the appearance and how life is approached. Ascendant trine the Sun has already been done with the Sun, so there is no need to repeat it.
- Ascendant in Capricorn. Sean approaches life in a cautious and responsible way.
- Ascendant conjunct Saturn. He can be conservative and serious.
- Ascendant square Mercury in Virgo, eighth house. He will criticise people who disagree with how he wants to do things. Especially in business.
- Ascendant opposite Mars in Gemini, sixth house. He can be argumentative.
- Ascendant opposed by Jupiter in Cancer, seventh house. He can exaggeratc issues.
- Ascendant trine Neptune in Virgo seventh house. He is a kind and compassion person and the understanding he receives from partners will help him overcome his niggardly side.
Summary. Sean approaches life in a cautious and responsible way and this is how people see him. He will criticise people who disagree with how he wants to do things and argue - especially when money or inheritances are involved. He can exaggerate issues to try to get his way. But essentially, he is a kind and compassion person and the understanding he receives from partners will help him overcome this side of his nature.
6. Read Mercury - how the mind thinks. Mercury has already been done extensively with the Sun, Moon and ascendant, so there is no need to repeat it. This often happens because Mercury orbits very close to the Sun.
7. Read the affections - Venus; how easy it will be to give and receive love. Note that Connery only has hard aspects to Venus. This indicates he had/has issues expressing his affections, which he needed to sort out.
- Venus in Libra in the 8th. Sean is a romantic. He adores beautiful women and making love to them.
- Venus opposing Uranus in Aries, second house. His independent side does not like restrictions that a committed relationship places upon him.
- Venus square Jupiter and Pluto in Cancer, seventh house. He can become obsessed with a partner when he is in love. Major problems will arise in relationships if he tries to control his partner by using force.
- Venus conjunct the south-node. The previous statement “He can become obsessed with a partner,” this is an old pattern. Giving the partner greater freedoms and independence would help him overcome it. This is important, because the compulsion is interfering with his spiritual growth.
- Venus semi-square Neptune in Virgo, seventh house. Sometimes he has unrealistic expectations.
Summary. Sean is a romantic. He adores beautiful women and making love to them. Sometimes he has unrealistic expectations and can become obsessed with a partner and create problems by trying to control her. Giving the partner greater freedoms and independence would help him overcome this and is a positive move forwards for Connery. It will help him overcome his possessiveness. When he gets the balance right, his intimate relationships will be more harmonious.
8. Read the passions, the desires - Mars.
- Mars in Gemini in the sixth house. Sean is passionate about his work and will debate and argue to try to get things right.
- Mars opposing Saturn on the ascendant. When obstacles arise, frustration can compel him to argue and to fight.
- Mars sextile Neptune in Virgo, 7th and eighth houses. It will help to direct his frustrations and energics into his artistic interests.
- Mars sextile the north-node. It also helps to direct his energies into new projects that he initiates. This will help his spiritual progression in life.
Summary. Sean is passionate about his work and is an assertive communicator and debater. He can get frustrated with delays and be argumentative. It helps to direct his energies into his artistic interests and new projects that he initiates. This will help him progress forwards in life.
By focusing the reading upon the personal planets and ascendant, all the planets were involved. So, there is no need to redo the outer planets. Once the basic character reading has been completed, other specialist arcas such as career and health can be done.
9. Career opportunities for Sean Connery. When considering a career, look to see if there is a link between the second house of money and the 10th of profession, or to the 6th of work. For Connery, Neptune, ruler of the 2nd, sextiles Mars in the sixth house. In turn, Mars is a ruler of the 10th with Scorpio ruling that house. This generally indicates that if the right choices are made, he should have a successful career and make money from it. We know that he did.
a. The 2nd house - making money. Connery's house of money is ruled by Neptune, with Pisces on the cusp. Neptune is in analytical Virgo, trine Saturn on the ascendant and sextile Mars in Gemini in the sixth house. This indicates that if he presents the right mature, tough-guy image and works intelligently to develop his craft (Saturn on the ascendant, Mars in Gemini 6), he can make a career and money out of selling illusion (Neptune).
b. The 6th house of work skills. With Gemini on the sixth house cusp, the development of good communication skills would enhance his career opportunities. Mars is in the 6th in Gemini and Connery started his carcer doing manual labour. In his movic career, he became famous playing the fictional spy 007, James Bond; a tough, masculine man's man (Mars sextile Neptune). He communicated this excellently, and the money started rolling in.
c. The 10th house of profession and fame. Scorpio is on the 10th and it rules amongst other things, death, weaponry, sex and spying. All the attributes of James Bond that made Connery famous. If Connery had chosen not to go into acting, it is likely he would have been successful in other ways.
10. Soul purpose and spiritual direction. a. The Ascendant Sign - soul purpose. The first place to look in the chart is at the ascendant sign, which represents the purpose of the soul - the qualities to develop and things to do so that greater love and wisdom is developed and expressed in the life. With the Capricorn ascendant, this is to be “ambitious for the greater good, to use one's powers, resources and influence to benefit humanitarian causes.” This purpose is ruled by Saturn, since it is the esoteric ruler of Capricorn - as well as the exoteric. The chart listing the esoteric planet rulers is in the “Planets” Chapter, Ascendant section. With Saturn on the ascendant, Connery's appearance and actions would be scrutinised and judged. He was required to act with integrity and to be authentic in his life demonstration. Otherwise, people would see his fakeness and judge him.
b. The Sun Sign. The Sun represents the personality, the lower self. The spiritual goal is always to develop the positive traits of the Sun Sign.
c. The Moon Sign (in Virgo), the prison of the soul pattern. An emotional need to criticise people, is the problem pattern. This infects the mind, so it becomes hypercritical and demands perfection in this imperfect world. This must be purified. Vulcan, the purifier, is the esoteric ruler of Virgo. The need to transform these negative traits are emphasised with the Moon in the eighth house.
d. The Moon's north and south nodes. With the north-node in Aries (third house), positive traits such as using the initiative, courage and assertiveness must be expressed, to counterbalance Libra south-node negatives such as indecision and procrastination. Communicating what he thinks to those around him is another important goal for Connery. He has definitely achieved this through his movie career.
This is a simple interpretation and a guideline to help students get started. Once a basic technique has been mastered and there is greater familiarity in navigating a chart, then experiment with different models or let the reading unfold in a manner that seems to suit the chart or the client. As previously stated, the key to becoming a proficient and excellent astrologer, is to keep reading charts on an ongoing basis.
