1. Definition and purpose. “Secondary Progressions” refers to an astrology method of determining the internal developments of the birth pattern - the evolution of consciousness, for any given age in the life.

2. How progressions work.

• a. The system is based on the notion that “one day equals a year,” - each day after birth, symbolises a year in time. For example:
  • The planet positions the day after birth symbolise the influences in the 2nd year of life.
  • The planet positions the 10th day after birth symbolise the influences in the 10th year of life.
  • The planet positions the 50th day after birth symbolise the influences in the 50th year of life.
• b. The progressed chart - the migration of the planets, ascendant and MC into new signs and houses; these indicate the nature of the internal changes that are being experienced.
• c. The timing of a progression depends upon the speed of the planet. It starts when the moving planet's approach is approximately one degree away from the exact aspect to the natal planet. Its influence peaks in intensity when exact; then fades gradually and ends when approximately 30 minutes past the aspect. The goal is to identify exactly when a progression starts, peaks then ends. This invaluable knowledge enables us to gain greater control over events happening in the life.

3. How progressions are used. Progressions are commonly used in two ways. First, the progressed chart is set up for the date of a significant life-event, so the influences that were active can be studied. Secondly, the astrologer sets the chart up for a period of interest. For instance, a client asks for the astrology influences in the coming year to be read. a. The tri-wheel arrangement is the most common model as this example shows.

• Natal chart is in the centre.
• Secondary-progressions is in the middle.
• The outermost wheel has the planet transits.

Progressions are always studied in relation to the natal chart. The natal chart is what we start with. The progressed chart is who we are becoming.

b. Only work with the personal planet progressions - and the ascendant, MC and Jupiter. Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto progress so slowly, they make no new aspects, staying close to their natal position. goes

c. As a personal planet progresses - as it into new signs and houses and aspects natal (and also progressed) planets and points; that part of the nature the progressed personal planet represents is stimulated.

d. The sign a planet is progressing through, it colours, affects and changes that part of the character represented by the planet.

e. The house a planet is progressing through brings people and experiences into the life to represent its interests. For example, the seventh house brings in potential partners, the tenth house brings career opportunities, the third house brings new communications.

f. The natal planet or point being aspected by the progressed planet, is the part of the old life, the old nature, which is being affected and forced to change. The house or houses which that affected planet rules, these affairs are also being energised and changed.

4. Each progressed planet affects us according to its nature.

• Sun. The sign and house the Sun is moving through, they show the energies and life experiences that are promoting the expression of personal will and authority. When the progressed Sun makes an aspect to the natal chart, it means the personality is being offered an opportunity be wiser and more mature in the way it handles the affairs of the natal planet. This opportunity will either be challenging (hard aspects and conjunctions to malefics), or generally pleasurable (casy aspects and conjunctions to benign planets). The Sun progresses approximately one degree a year (59').
  • Example 1: progressed planets changing signs. A part of the character begins to change when a progressed planet moves into a new sign. For example, Princess Diana married Charles in 1981 when her progressed Sun was still in shy and sensitive Cancer. But it moved into Leo in 1983, two years later. Her shy, sensitive side took on new regal qualities and she became more independent and demanding of her rights. If she had lived, 30 years later (approximately), the Sun would have progressed into Virgo and she would have gradually assumed the discriminating qualities of that sign.
  • Example 2: progressed planets changing houses. It is also very significant when a planet progresses into a new house. When Diana married Charles, her progressed Sun was on the cusp of, and moving into, her eighth house of death and transformation. Was this prophetic? She began a cycle which totally transformed her life, brought on severe emotional trauma and led to an untimely death.

• Ascendant. It represents new beginnings and interests. It also represents growth experiences that are part of the plan of the soul.

• Midheaven. It brings changes to the career and higher goals. It progresses the same rate as the Sun.

• Moon. It triggers major emotional events. The house it is moving through shows where the emotions and everyday concerns are focused. The sign it is moving through colours emotional expression. The aspects it makes activates different parts of the life. The Moon progresses approximately 1 degree a month. It completes one cycle of the chart, returning to its natal position in 28-30 years. This completes a major emotional cycle and the beginning of a new one.

• Mercury. Its house, sign and aspects, show how and where mental attention is currently being focused and the nature of communications that are occurring. It also represents travel. It progresses approximately 1 degree, 40 minutes a year.

• Venus. Its house, sign and aspects show how and where love and affection are currently being expressed. It also relates to artistic and financial matters. Venus also progresses approximately 1 degree 40 minutes a year; but fractionally slower than Mercury.

• Mars. Its house, sign and aspects show how and where the passions are currently being expressed. It brings energy, physical contact, new projects and in the case of hard aspects including conjunctions - conflict and accidents. Mars progresses approximately 35 minutes a year.

• Jupiter. Its house, sign and aspects show how and where life is expanding with wisdom and understanding. It brings rewards, benefits, expansion and travel. Jupiter progresses approximately 11-13 minutes a year.
