Introduction

The Path

The Ageless Wisdom offers a perspective that one human life is a series of many incarnations along a path of evolution. Humans incarnate again and again as they work to purify themselves with a goal of developing their innate qualities into perfections. Viewing man, the microcosm, as a miniature sun, “the light is ‘under the bushel’ or deeply hidden by a veil of matter, but in due process of evolution it will shine forth to such an extent that the veils will be lost from sight in a blaze of exceeding glory.” TCF 228-9.

Along this evolutionary journey, or Path, humans encounter experiences, energies and forces that are accommodating or conflicting during the process of the soul’s evolutionary journey from the physical to the spiritual. The development of perfections and imperfections along this evolutionary path is the subject of this paper. Esoteric Psychology with its three branches, Science of Rayology, Esoteric Astrology and the Energy Centres will be the source material.

To identify distinct individual effects that contribute to the development of perfections/ imperfections is challenging since there is an extremely close relationship between the parts of Esoteric Psychology and how they influence the topic and, thus, this attempt will be limited in its scope offering brief glimpses into this complex subject. Because various terminology is used in the source material, take note that perfections and imperfections will relate to qualities, virtues, vices, strengths and weaknesses. The subject of perfections itself is worthy of further research to clearly define these differences.

Consciousness and the Path

There are many ways to look at the Path of consciousness evolution from one stage to another. In humans it is the transition from a lower state of awareness, to a higher state, leading eventually to identification with a supreme universal consciousness reaching the sublime heights of soul enlightenment. Spirit and matter, polarities within which consciousness can be viewed, represent dualities that separate one energy into two parts.

The Path and its sections have application to our topic including:

The Ordinary Path

The Path of Discipleship

The Path of Initiation

Often humans embark on the Path because an awakening has occurred and a thirst for something unknown occurs. The soul may be calling.

The soul is that factor in matter (or rather that which emerges out of the contact between spirit and matter) which produces sentient response and what we call consciousness in its varying forms; it is also that latent or subjective essential quality which makes itself felt as light or luminous

radiation. It is the “self-shining from within” which is characteristic of all forms. EP1 130

Each of these parts has subsections that include types of energy and consciousness (physical, emotional, mental). These parts have application to development of character during the evolutionary process. Later sections of this paper will address some of these.

Perfections/Imperfections

Each human is a unit of the Divine seeking perfection on its journey. The Tibetan beautifully described this process in which the microcosm (human) seeks more light.

…that the interaction between the individualized Selves will result in the merging to perfection of the flame within each one, and a blending of the heat; this will proceed until there is ‘one flame with countless sparks’ within it, until the heat is general and

balanced. When this is the case and each Son of God is a perfected Sun, characterized by perfectly expressed light and heat, then the entire solar system, the greater Son of God, will be the perfected Sun. TCF 228-9.

Virtue is the manifestation in man of the spirit of cooperation with his brothers, necessitating unselfishness, understanding and complete self-forgetfulness. Vice is the negation of this attitude. These two words signify in reality simply perfection and imperfection, conformity to a divine standard of brotherhood or a failure to achieve that standard. Standards are shifting things and change with man's growth towards divinity. EPI 284

Duality exists for humanity with perfection and imperfection two poles offering humanity the backdrop for the struggle between the powers of Light and the powers of Darkness. Humans experience these dualities on a daily basis and, depending upon their placement between the poles, may be anywhere from fighting their way through the opposites or easily moving along the way without struggle to peace so pure that we are never affected by outer circumstances and remain in the consciousness of the Soul.

…the effect of the impact of energy is dependent upon the nature of the vehicle of response. According to his equipment and the nature of his bodies, so will man react to the inflowing energies. This is a fundamental statement. It is a law and should be most carefully considered. The effects of a Master or initiate upon men are widely different because each man brings to the impact of His vibration a type of physical body, an astral or emotional nature, and a mind which are in each case different from all others. EOH 85

Humanity moves between these two poles and finds temporary rest along the way of incarnations based on a number of variables (portion of path, type of bodies, astrological influences). Imperfections will exist in one life and then be transformed in another as the human evolves. In one life, a woman may have strength and independence. In another, she

may add compassion to her cluster of perfections having developed that perfection in a current life.

One example of perfection is Christ who brought men and women together to share the hope of heaven with others and serve the world following in His footsteps.

But Christ came as a special Messenger. He came to found the kingdom of God on earth and to institute a new and tangible expression of Deity upon our planet. His mission has not failed. The kingdom is now organised upon earth and is composed of those men and women everywhere who have lost

sight of their own individual salvation and hope of heaven because they know that unless heaven can express itself here and now it is but a futile hope. They are occupied with the processes of self-perfection and self

purification because they seek to serve their fellowmen more efficiently and adequately, and thus “glorify their Father which is in heaven. BTC 281

As the wheel of life turns and souls take new incarnations with each turn, man learns his lessons, under the guidance of the soul and with the Hierarchy and its schools, and refines his energy giving us hope that perfection is a possibility humanity can attain.

The Buddha set an inspirational example of inner character development. The perfections he described allow us to listen to the inner voice in every one of us and aspire to higher levels of consciousness so that we tread the path of perfection to completion.

Energy, Constitution of Man, Perfections and Imperfections

Energy represents the living activity of the spiritual realms, and of that spiritual entity, the soul. From an esoteric perspective, may be defined as:

∙ Prana, the Sanskrit term meaning ‘Absolute Energy’, is found everywhere and in everything. It is found in all things having life and that life is in all things – in every Atom …. SAM97

∙ The life essence of every plan in the sevenfold area, the cosmic physical plane. TEV 154-5

∙ Prana is the sum total of the energy in the body. LOS 217

There are a variety of energies that govern, control and determine aspects of the average man’s equipment, and condition his consciousness. The universe is a larger energy system of which humans are a part. In the esoteric world, it might be said that all is energy.

The world we live in is all energy. The atom is energy and God is energy. DNAII 303.

Man, the average human being, is a sum total of separative tendencies,

of uncontrolled forces and of disunited energies, which slowly and

gradually become coordinated, fused, and blended in the separative

personality. EPII7.

Virtue is the calling in of new energies and of a new vibratory rhythm so that the soul becomes the positive controlling factor and the soul forces supersede those of the bodies. This process is that of character building. TWM 202

The esoteric literature offers a model of human seven planes of energy as seen in Figure 1, The Constitution of Man, combining a variety of energy dimensions. The range of evolution from the Personality to the Divine plane each contain vibrational frequencies that offer man the Path of evolution. A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, by Alice Bailey, as a result of her telepathic work with the Tibetan is a comprehensive examination of the Constitution, energy, consciousness, evolution and other factors.

Later in the paper terminology related to the Constitution (planes, lower self/Personality, Ego/Higher Self, among others) will be used and the following description of the Constitution will helpful in framing the subject matter of perfections and imperfections . The following is repeated from Initiation, Human and Solar.

I. The Monad, or pure Spirit, the Father in Heaven.

This aspect reflects the three aspects of the Godhead:

1. Will or Power……………..The Father.

2. Love-wisdom……………..The Son.

3. Active Intelligence………The Holy Spirit.

and is only contacted at the final initiations, when man is nearing the end of his journey and is perfected. The Monad reflects itself again in

II. The Ego, Higher Self, or Individuality.

This aspect is potentially

1. Spiritual Will………………….Atma.

2. Intuition………………………..Buddhi, Love-wisdom, the Christ principle.

3. Higher or abstract Mind….Higher Manas.

The Ego begins to make its power felt in advanced men, and increasingly on the Probationary Path until by the third initiation the control of the lower self by the higher is perfected, and the highest aspect begins to make its

energy felt. The Ego reflects itself in

III. The Personality, or lower self, physical plane man.

This aspect is also threefold:—

1. A mental body…………….lower manas.

2. An emotional body………astral body.

3. A physical body………….the dense physical and the etheric body.

The aim of evolution is therefore to bring man to the realisation of the Egoic aspect and to bring the lower nature under its control. HIS xv

Chakras/Centres

The chakras are involved in perfections and imperfections in several ways. The chakras unfold blossom and change based on a number of factors including planes of consciousness, energy, life experience, position on the Path (whether probationer, disciple, etc.). The Constitution provides humans with a graphic presentation of energy levels from physical/etheric, astral, mental, causal and above. Movement from its lower levels to its higher levels is part of the Path. The body, emotions, and mind are important dimensions to purify and transform for those on the Path. Virtues have a place in this energetic constitution and the centres are influenced by higher energies such as virtue cultivation. Development of perfections and transformation of imperfections have effects on the centres.

They are brought automatically into the needed radiatory condition by right living, high thinking and loving activity. These virtues may seem to you dull and uninteresting, but they are most potent and scientifically effective in bringing the centres into the desired radiatory activity. When the task is done, and when all the centres are living spheres of outgoing, radiatory activity, they swing into each others' orbit so that the initiate becomes a centre of living light and not a composite of seven radiant centres. Think on this. TEV175

In humanity’s evolution, virtues of the heart are particularly significant in the world today where love is often in short supply. The twelve qualities of the heart chakra reflect perfections that set a standard of excellence for all humans particularly those on the Path and serving humanity.

Then, bearing in mind that the heart centre is the repository of twelve forces or energies, seek to develop them by pondering upon the twelve virtues through which these energies express themselves, taking one each month for a year.

a. Group love, embracing individuals.

b. Humility, signifying your personality attitude.

c. Service, indicating your soul's preoccupation.

d. Patience, signifying the embryonic immortality and persistence which is a soul characteristic.

e. Life, or expressed activity which is the manifestation of love because it is essential dualism.

f. Tolerance, which is the first expression of buddhic understanding.

g. Identification with others, which is embryonic fusion, carried eventually to synthesis when the head centre is developed.

h. Compassion, which is essentially the right use of the pairs of opposites. i. Sympathy, which is the consequence of knowledge and of the unfoldment of the knowledge petals. Such energy then is in touch with the heart centre. j. Wisdom, which is the fruit of love and indicates the awakening of the love petals of the egoic lotus.

k. Sacrifice, which is the giving of the heart's blood or life for others. DNAII 660-1

Pondering on the heart virtues monthly, as well as using discrimination, contemplation, application, practice, and self-examination to facilitate their inclusion is suggested by The Tibetan. Each of these twelve contributes to a life view that honors those who came before us and set examples for us to follow.

Chakras, Rays, Path

The Tibetan shows us the inter-relationships of consciousness, the path, rays, and chakra petals as follows:

From the angle of these three ray influences, we have (in the life of the

aspirant) a recapitulation of the triple process which we could call the

“processes of unfoldment of the Lemurian, Atlantean and Aryan

consciousness”. On the Path of Probation, the ray of the physical body must become subordinated to the potencies emanating from those soul rays

which stream forth from the outer tier of petals in the egoic lotus…. These are the knowledge petals. On the Path of Discipleship, the astral body is brought into subjection by the ray of the soul as it pours through the second tier of petals, the love petals. Upon the Path of Initiation, until the third

initiation, the ray of the mental body is subdued by the force of the petals of sacrifice, found in the third tier of petals…. After the third initiation, the whole personality, composed of the three aspects, becomes sensitive to the energy of pure electric fire or life, as it pours through the “closed bud at the heart of the egoic lotus”…. Such is the programme for humanity, as it

concerns the unfoldment of human consciousness. EPII 22-23

As the chakra petals receive ray energies, the etheric, emotional and mental bodies are affected, consciousness receives light and changes occur in man depending upon a variety of factors including those identified previously (part of the path, physical body type/vehicle of person, etc.)

Every human being finds himself upon one of the seven rays. His personality is found, in every life, upon one of them, in varying rotation, according to the ray of the ego or soul…. The fact of there being seven ray types carries great

implications, and the intricacy of the subject is baffling to the neophyte. EPI 128

The esoteric teachings tell us that energy gives man physical conditions unique to him, influences the astral-emotional nature, colors the mind body, guides the way energy is distributed because the rays differ in their vibratory rates, and are focused on a particular centre in the body. Each ray works through one centre primarily and through the remaining six in a specific order. The ray influences how a man responds to certain strengths and weaknesses, how he is limited by it and benefits him.

Figure 2, The Chakras, Physiological and Psychological Effects offers a look at the seven chakras with positive and negative psychological effects. Perfections and Imperfections can be found in this chart under those effects. Using this chart positive and negative qualities by chakra are identified.

The Seven Rays

Each Ray energy is a unique energy producing different results depending upon certain factors involving the application of energy. In the following list, Perfections and Imperfections are identified by Ray.

From the above list we might conclude that there is a spectrum of energy along which the qualities distribute themselves in a human. If this statement is correct, we might assume that along this spectrum, varying degrees of the perfections and imperfections will appear in any one person. The Seven Ray Questionnaire would be a good tool to use to identify these variances.

Figure 3, Ray Imperfections or 7 Psychological Causes of Disease, identifies Ray perfections and imperfections (Keynotes section of the Figure) by chakra. For example, Ray 1 and the Head Centre chakra show strength which can be correlated with a perfection recognizing that strength can be an imperfection or a perfection depending upon the emphasis placed on it and whether it is balanced or carried to an extreme.

Of the Seven Rays, Ray Four, has a unique role in our discussion because it is related to the functions, relationships and service of man and embodies an energy type of at-one-ment which is a healing force bringing all forms to an ultimate perfection under certain conditions. From the following quote perfections are identified.

The service humanity is to render is that of producing unity, harmony, and beauty in nature, through blending into one functioning, related unity the soul in all forms. This is achieved individually at first, then it takes place in group formation, and finally it demonstrates through an entire kingdom in nature. When this takes place, the fourth Creative Hierarchy will be

controlled predominantly by the fourth ray (by which I mean that the

majority of its egos will have fourth ray personalities, thus facilitating the task of fusion), and the consciousness of its advanced units will function

normally upon the fourth plane of buddhic energy or intuitional

awareness. EPII 364

There may be a range of energies by Ray type showing perfections and imperfections. Ray Two, the Ray of Love Wisdom, when seen through the lens of each astrological sign expands one perfection, love, in its dimensional range based on astrological sign.

Overview and Definition

Components of esoteric astrology include the Seven Rays and astrological chart components of planets, signs and houses. Signs, planets and the houses have a role in perfections and imperfections along the Path and different combinations of these energies produce different results.

Esoteric astrology concerns itself primarily with the unfoldment of

consciousness, with the impacts which awaken it to the peculiar “gifts” of any particular sign and ray endowment and with the reaction of the man and his consequent enrichment through his response to the influence of a sign, working through the esoteric planets from the angle of humanitarian awareness, of discipleship and of initiation.

In a previous section of this paper, the Path and its sections/parts was described. Signs, planets and houses have application to the Path also as follows:

o PLANETS in the HOUSES represent the distorted perception of the

lower nature.

o HOUSES represent personality.

o SIGNS represent the pure qualities and clear perception of the Soul.

The lower nature generally refers to average humanity and the planets in the twelve Houses correlate to that type of man. Karmic influences are involved. The Constitution of Man displays the personality and its components, physical, emotional and lower mental planes. The twelve signs enter the picture later and their impressions replace planetary energies.

Astrology and a Universe of Energy

In addition to the energetic influences of the chakras in the human energy body, there are also external influences that arise out of far distant Sources, such as zodiacal, systemic and planetary energies. Signs are of the Soul. They are part of the universe which include three major constellations, the Great Bear, Sirius, and Pleiades, a triangle of energy. Our solar system is located within this field and the constellations have a major impact upon our planet.

This triangle influences our solar system including humanity. Astrological signs and planets are involved in the distribution of energies. Nine of the external influences of far distant sources are listed below. They are a portion, not all, of universal energies influencing us. For the purpose of the topic under discussion, a brief identification of them follows:

∙ Constellation of the Great Bear

∙ The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades

∙ Sirius, the Dog Star

∙ The seven solar systems of which ours is one

∙ The seven sacred planets of which ours is not one

∙ The five non-sacred planets or “hidden” planets

∙ The seven planetary centres

∙ The seven centres of force in the human etheric body

∙ The twelve zodiacal constellations

Humans respond differently to these energies depending upon the type of vehicle or body they possess. As we proceed with our broad review of perfections and imperfections in humans, keep in mind this larger view of the universe and its energies that interface with humanity in a variety of ways.

Exoteric and esoteric astrology, consciousness and Path stages

Esoteric energies blend with exoteric energies of the orthodox planets and do not cancel out their influence. Rather, the esoteric energies subordinate and overpower them. The old influences remain with man yet are improved and upgraded due to the new experiences with consciousness expanded.

Specifically, there are three levels to consider in relation to consciousness and the Path.

Level 1 – Exoteric astrology deals with the characteristics and qualities of the personality and of the form aspects, and also with the events, happenings, circumstances and the conditioning environment which appear in the

personal horoscope, indicative of planetary control and not of solar control. EA 145

Level 2 - Esoteric astrology concerns itself primarily with the unfoldment of consciousness, [Page 146] with the impacts which awaken it to the peculiar “gifts” of any particular sign and ray endowment and with the reaction of the man and his consequent enrichment through his response to the influence of a sign, working through the esoteric planets from the angle of humanitarian awareness, of discipleship and of initiation. EA 145-6

Level 3 – The Creative Hierarchies. Each of the seven Hierarchies of Beings, found within the Twelve, Who are the Builders or the Attractive Agents are (in their degree) intermediaries; all embody one of the types of force

emanating from the seven constellations. Their intermediary work,

therefore, is dual:

1. They are the mediators between Spirit and matter.

2. They are the transmitters of force from sources extraneous to the

solar system to forms within the solar system. EA 38

Signs

There are twelve signs and each sign reflects itself on three levels - the PERSONALITY, SOUL and SPIRIT levels. This means that whatever astrological sign a person is in, and at whatever level of consciousness s/he stands, the sign will be developing the needed level of consciousness. Chart 1, Signs and Planet Rulers, displays the relationship between Signs and Planets identifying three

types of ruling planets: esoteric, esoteric and hierarchy rulers. The Hierarchy level represents the highest level of consciousness of the Signs and will not be included in this discussion.

Chart 1, Signs and Rulers

Looking again at Path stages with reference to planets, the three stages below show three types of planets involved with each.

1. Ordinary Man - exoteric planets

2. Aspirants and Disciples - esoteric planets

3. Initiates - hierarchy planets

Ordinary man is influenced by the exoteric rulers, aspirants/disciples by the esoteric rulers and initiates by Hierarchy rulers. The ruling planet for the Path segment, a) ordinary unawakened humans, b) aspiring humans and disciples, and c) initiates who more advanced on the Path

influences the person accordingly. For the individual human, his/her sign and the ruling planet associated with it gives energy and influences his/her evolution.

The Ascendent Sign, the Soul’s Purpose

The signs are part of a triangle of forces: Ascendant, Sun Sign and Moon Sign. They are foundational as they influence a human’s chart and work at three levels – Ordinary, Soul and Spiritual.

The Ascendant is a vital point in space, where the Soul is concerned. The sign on the Ascendant represents the purpose of the Soul in the current incarnation and should be considered as the heart of the chart for those who are upon the Path. The rays of this sign represent the force and the qualities which are needing to be cultivated, for these bring the consciousness into alignment with the vibration and purpose of the Soul and the Soul Ray. We will look at this more in the section of the paper on Houses.

Rays, Signs Planets

The Seven Rays carry their energy through certain astrological Signs as well as Planets. Chart 2 gives us correspondence between the Rays, the Signs and the Planets (sacred and non-sacred). Be aware that the Rays flowing through the Signs affect those upon the Path, while the Rays flowing through the Planets control ordinary man.

Chart 2, Rays, Signs and Planets which carry them

Planets

There are twelve planets, seven sacred planets (Vulcan, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Neptune) and five non-sacred planets (Sun, Moon, Earth, Mars and Pluto). From a general perspective, all planets are associated with the external life, environment and circumstances,

and their forces primarily affect the personality. Take note that the placement of the planet in a sign and house in the chart has significance.

Basically, it might be said that a planet is regarded as “sacred” when its informing spiritual Life has taken five of the major cosmic initiations and that a “non-sacred” planet is one whose planetary Logos has not taken these initiations. This is an inadequate definition and is only in any way to be understood if you bear in mind that initiation is a process of developing inclusiveness. EA 503

The Logos of a non-sacred planet is becoming inclusive in His consciousness to all that is found within the solar ring-pass-not. He is establishing an esoteric “understanding relation” with all that lives within the body of manifestation of a solar Logos and is likewise registering a sensitive response to the quality of the Life which informs the Sun, Sirius. He has taken three cosmic initiations. EA 504

Some understanding of the distinction between a sacred and a non-sacred planet will come if you can realise that there is a paralleling correspondence between the consciousness of the initiate (up to and including the third initiation) and the consciousness of the Logos of a non-sacred planet… The Logos of a sacred planet has carried the divine work further along and is occupied with the task of synthesising into one unit of conscious response and activity, the higher divine aspect, that of the Monad, the will aspect. When this is accomplished, will, love and intelligence are blended and spirit, soul and body are at-one. Then the quality of the divine expression will be divine purpose, impulsed by will, motivated by love and carried forward with intelligence. EA 506

The Synthesizing Planets

Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Moon, and Jupiter are five planets of twelve that play a role in humanity’s evolution on the Path will be briefly reviewed in this section. Three planets, the synthesizing planets, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, have particular application to perfections. In A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, detailed information is given on the consciousness, the centres, planets, and more. Three of the seven major etheric centres, the crown, heart and throat centres are involved in energy changes. All the good that occurs in our earthly life is absorbed into the three and ultimately free the spiritual life of the lower nature to be restored to its Source. These centres represent the Trinity (Spirit-Soul-Intelligence) and in the disciple are ruled by Uranus (crown), Neptune (heart), and Saturn (throat). These three planets have a special role in our planetary lives. The initiate who demonstrates the perfection of the spiritual Trinity exhibits:

1. Divine will and power (Uranus),

2. Divine love and wisdom (Neptune)

3. Divine intelligence (Saturn).

Saturn, The Great Architect of the Universe

Saturn is related to Ray Three’s intelligence as its distributing agent as well as the custodian of the Law and holds the plan that exists in the mind of God. For humans this is the Temple of the Soul that is built upon the Discipleship Path which is ruled by Saturn and Mercury. Using Karma, the Law of Cause and Effect, consciousness evolves from ignorance to enlightenment.

Saturn is the Lord of Karma, the imposer of retribution and the one who demands full payment of all debts and who therefore condemns us to the struggle for existence, both from the form side and from the soul side. EA 105

Saturn guides us in wise choices and good decisions especially in adversity. Using intelligent choice in our actions produces results that enable us to learn and make better choices in the next life. We are toughened and strengthened in preparation for greater responsibilities as

advanced souls. Our movement on the Path can be gauged by our attitude to Saturn. If we see difficulties as opportunities that we learn from, we are more likely to be seen as “on the path of discipleship in truth and in deed and not just theoretically.” EA 284 We demonstrate wisdom in our choices and make the best decisions during hardship, suffering and misfortune.

Neptune, Lord of Eternal Love

As movement on the Path brings man to the stage where Neptune’s clarifying energy moves consciousness to connect with the hearts of others on the Path, universal love vibrates and purifies ordinary man. A new, higher way of life is sought as higher visions and ideals are stimulated. Initiations occur and purification continues.

Neptune has a relationship to Buddhic energy and represents the Soul in the triune Spirit-Soul Body. The astral nature and the solar plexus centre are purified by Neptune. After a long period of lives and incarnations, the mystical aspirant is developed. Turmoil, crisis, depression and isolation are felt until the aspirant dedicates him/herself to serious spiritual work which offers peace and serenity in the future as a Disciple. Purification brings the heart centre to pour out compassion, understanding and kindness. Perfections begin to appear and Buddhi develops.

The intuition becomes a receiver for the love from the Trinity’s soul aspect. The esoteric astrologer will see Neptune being dominant in the horoscope. As it begins to function, its force is received through the egoic lotus to the heart centre and the astral nature is refined.

.…Neptune is one of the major or synthesizing planets, that it is an

‘absorbing’ or ‘abstracting’ planet, and that it is connected with the

process whereby eventual perfection is demonstrated. TCF900

Uranus, Spirit’s Representative

In the triplicity of Spirit-Soul-Body, Uranus is Spirit. It disseminates the higher power of Spirit and is an energetic force shattering the prisons of consciousness enabling it to continue its journey on the Path to union with Spirit. Uranus connects the mind to spirit.

Uranus sharpens the mind, develops self-control, and focuses the will as organizational skills begin to flow and leadership blossoms. The mystic is replaced by the occultist seeking truth through knowledge, inquiry, experimentation and verification.

Uranus is the planet whose characteristics are the scientific mind, which, at this stage of the disciple's career, means that he can begin to live the occult life and the way of divine knowledge can take the place of the mystic way of feeling. EA 224

It means that knowledge can be transmuted into the way of wisdom and light.…Uranus, therefore, initiates a new order of life and conditions and this when developed in the life of the disciple-in its turn produces an

understanding of the causes of things as they are, and the desire to change the old order and the old orientation into the new. EA224

Moon

The Moon has been called the storehouse for the past where the unconscious of the lower self can be found. The attachments of the personality offer foundations for a new life and the Moon holds less and less importance as man advances on the Path. It represents destructive patterns from the past, which intrude into the present, and imprison the soul. EA19 In the astrological chart, the Moon veils the following planets with powerful forces that are revealed when the lower self is controlled.

∙ Vulcan is revealed for the average person, aspirant or probationary disciple purifying his/her nature

∙ Neptune is unveiled for the disciple developing Soul consciousness and love ∙ Uranus is unveiled for the initiate wielding spiritual power.

On the Path of Initiation, the Moon, veiling a sacred planet (probably Uranus), is active at the time of the 3rd Initiation along with Mars. The forces of these two combined represent the Dweller on the Threshold arises to wage war with the Soul. When the Soul is victorious, in one sense the personality is removed, this is symbolized by the Moon unveiling Uranus. The structure of the ego exists, but the life which uses it is Spirit.

Jupiter

Jupiter is a primary representative of Love-Wisdom and accompanies other planets that also represent a form of love. In terms of the Path, Jupiter is at work when the aspiring wo/man searches for truth and wisdom.

The Lord of Love-Wisdom (the second ray), is the embodiment of pure love, is as close to the heart of the Solar Logos as was the beloved disciple close to the heart of the Christ of Galilee. This Life instils into all forms the quality of love, with its more material manifestation of desire…. This Lord of Love is the most potent of the seven rays, because He is on the same cosmic ray as the solar Deity. He expresses Himself primarily through the planet Jupiter, which is His body of manifestation. Bailey EP1 23

Consciousness expands as higher energies impact it. Jupiter’s guidance enables consciousness to evolve from:

⮚Selfishness to selflessness

⮚Harmfulness to harmlessness.

When the soul calls, the aspirant hears it and goes on a search for truth and wisdom. Jupiter is working to fuse the heart and mind, then between personality and soul, then between the soul and monad. Jupiter cultivates love wisdom and spreads brotherly love, fellowship and goodwill are qualities developed from Jupiter’s radiance.

Planets, Initiations and Energy Perfections

Planets and signs are involved in Initiations along the Path and influence human energies toward perfection. Initiations are significant stages in the expansion of consciousness. The Tibetan tells us that Initiation is “entering into man of those energies which are distinctive of the soul and of the soul alone, - the forces of intelligent love and of spiritual will.” EPII 12. With each Initiation, the individual’s consciousness is purified and more soul or spiritual qualities are expressed. Two examples of the 1st and 2nd Initiations show those energies at work.

1st Initiation

The personality not the soul is involved at this point. Materialism, a former influence takes a secondary role as the Probationary Path opens. There is a thirst that cannot be quenched along with a yearning for completion. The physical, emotional and mental dimensions are the focus for cleansing to remove obstacles that block the way to a new life. Pluto and Vulcan (veiled by the Moon) rule this initiation. Pluto helps release of blocks in the soul, especially in the lower regions. Vulcan purifies deeply into the recesses of nature.

2nd Initiation

The Soul is challenging the human ego for control and this causes upheaval in the emotions (astral nature). The poles of opposites find emotional crises occurring again and again until the human begins to look in the right direction to find answers. Qualities vying for control might be:

Perfection Imperfection

Love Hate

Peace Anger

The veil may begin to lift when the human (aspirant on the path) finds something (a book, movie, personal story, meditative tool) that inspires him/her offering an example of someone else who was in the same position and moved to a better place. Because the 2nd initiation deals with astral nature, control of emotions is fundamental and a commitment to manifest finer feelings begins.

At the 2nd Initiation, the planets of Neptune, Venus and Jupiter rule this initiation. Neptune works the astral nature and opens the heart to Divine love. Jupiter also opens the heart and prepares it for wisdom. Venus, the planet of love, speaks to the soul about intelligent love.

Here are three planets working with three types of the love perfection. Other characteristics related to the 2nd Initiation are inclusiveness, selflessness and harmlessness representing the presence of perfections blooming in humans.

These are only two of nine initiations along the Path. At each initiation evolutionary work is done involving certain chakras/centres giving us other topics for research.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Planets, Rays, Signs

As consciousness evolves from the Personality level to the Soul level, negative energies such as glamours and illusions may be reduced or eliminated. With this clearing and purification, life can be viewed from a more authentic, genuine perspective. The Personality has been left behind and life’s purpose may come into view along with a desire for a qualitative, sublime future experiences. Imperfections are removed or transformed as perfections emerge and become a permanent part of consciousness.

Figure 5 reflects the Seven Rays and the Signs and Planets they flow through. Personality and soul qualities of the Signs and Ray Strengths and Weaknesses are noted. Consciousness expansion can be seen in the development of strengths. While an analysis of each Ray, Sign and Planet exceeds the scope of this paper, one example demonstrates this shift. In Figure 5, Ray 5, Concrete Mind, intellect is noted in personality and soul qualities. In Personality the acute intellect is of the ego and for material gain. Moving to the soul dimension the acute intellect is changed into expansive directions with vision, world good and skilled leadership emerging leaving the egoistic qualities behind.

Houses

The Houses offer opportunities for growth of the lower self with consciousness changing as the personality grows and integrates. When service enters the picture a desire to do something for the greater good emerges. For younger souls the houses may be confining and restrictive. If this is the case, the houses and ruling planets are certain guides to future destiny.

[The houses] indicate limitation or that which holds the dweller in

the mansion from expanding his consciousness, if he permits himself

to be imprisoned by them. On the other hand, they offer opportunity

if he is oriented towards a higher life. EA 508

Houses as perceived by the Soul v. Personality

The way we see the world gives us a framework within which to experience it. The perspective can be of the soul or of the personality. The Constitution of Man displays seven levels with the personality in the lower sections and the soul within the spiritual triad near the higher mental level. The personality views life from the lower planes (physical, emotional and mental planes). In the Houses the energies of both the higher and lower meet and react to one another. The ruling planets of a House show where the energy will be directed and released.

In Chart 1 the signs along with the planetary rulers were given. For application in this paper, the two types of exoteric and esoteric are noted since they apply to the soul or the personality.

o The esoteric planets represent the activities of the Soul.

o The exoteric rulers represent personality desire.

1st House

The 1st House has special significance in esoteric astrology because it contains the Ascendant, the point of the rising Sun in the chart, a symbol for the presence of Divinity which will rise into human consciousness. When receptivity to the Soul Ray emerges, then the rising Sign begins to influence the life. The positive qualities of the Ascendent Sign replace negative qualities.

The qualities to be cultivated are from both the Sign and its Rays. These will bring the Personality into right relation with the Soul. The Rays of the Sign will colour the Soul Ray. Using Pisces as the Ascendent, from Chart 2, shows the qualities to develop are Love Wisdom of Ray Two, and Devotion and Idealism of Ray Six.

There are more signs, planets, rays and houses to review and this is left to further research. To summarize, the Tibetan tells us to respond to the opportunities offered in the signs rather than the conditions of the planets and houses. Perfections/virtues are developed through the pure qualities of the signs.

The key point to recognize from our explorations is to look to the Signs for opportunities rather than the planets or houses. The perfections in the signs present virtues to cultivate.

Examples of Perfections

Reflecting on what has been covered so far in this paper, we have looked at the development of perfections and have not specifically discussed individual perfections. The Tibetan offers the following comments for our consideration regarding the 12 Heart Qualities presented earlier in this paper.

Humility - A right sense of proportion, balanced point of view.

I would like also to point out with all the clarity and power at my disposal, the very deep necessity for humility and its constantly recurring expression. I refer not to an inferiority complex but to that adjusted sense of right

proportion which equips its possessor with a balanced point of view as to himself, his responsibilities and his life work. This, when present, will enable him to view himself dispassionately and his presented opportunities with equal dispassion. DINA I 95

True humility is based on fact, on vision and on time pressures. DINA I 97

Humility must always accompany a spiritual self-respect which forbids a

disciple to stand anywhere upon the Path, except in his rightful place. The fact is that discipleship warrants recognition. There is no false pride in

knowing that one is a disciple. This I point out to you and to all disciples. DINA I 562

Patience – Quality of endurance, will, persistence

I refer to effects which will express themselves as a group activity,

motivated by the essential values of selflessness and persistent effort

(which is sustained concentration, in the last analysis) and thereby

producing conditions for which the Lord of the World, the Ancient of Days, has long waited. The patience and sustaining love of Shamballa is infinite. EXH 165

When you remember that it has only been in the present world crisis that the planetary Logos dared subject the forms in all the four kingdoms to the direct stimulation of His impelling will, you will realise the long, long

patience which is perhaps His most distinctive characteristic. Patience is a quality of will; it is of the nature of a strict adherence to a fixed intention. R&I 658-9

Problems with adaptation to energy

Energy can be too strong or too weak, by over or under stimulation, with the result of imbalance or disease manifesting in humans. This can appear as physical, emotional and/or mental problems and the personality is affected.

The disciple becomes, for instance, overstimulated, and therefore, overactive and unbalanced. This can be in emotional, mental or other consciousness planes and represent over development and over-expression in some part of his nature so that a centre can be overactive (example: over-organized) or inactive (example: under-organized).

Each human being is a unique bundle of energies interacting with each other and affecting the individual. Consciousness changes as man moves along the Path. These changes will be adapted to differently depending upon a variety of factors. Each person, as a part of humanity, is at a different stage in adapting to the energies and this is no easy task. Psychological problems in adaptation have been described in the Bailey book Esoteric Psychology II. These problems can be obstacles to the development of positive qualities such as the perfections and need consideration by all humans on the Path.

Assistance may be needed to make the process of blending spirit and matter as “painless” as possible. An esoteric psychologist would diagnose the problem, find solutions and assist the individual to find balance using analysis of some, or all, of the factors identified in this paper.

Conclusion

The Future

Throughout this paper we have referred to exoteric science (the outer form, or matter aspect, and its electrical nature) and esoteric science (the nature of the subjective energies and the qualities which colour and condition the form). A new psychology and a new science will develop when these two perspectives are brought together giving us a more accurate psychology and a new science of humanity.

Types of energy which have hitherto been latent are now becoming

potent. The consequent world reaction is, in the initial stages,

material in its manifestation; in its final stages, divine qualities will

manifest and change history and civilization EPI 279-280

Each chakra may offer opportunities for development of perfections and release of imperfections. Previously in this paper, virtues of the Heart Chakra, as described in DNAII 660, were identified. One example was given of the heart chakra and its twelve qualities. As humans evolve on their Path, it is possible for these perfections to be unveiled. Guidance is needed so that certain procedures and practices (such as meditation) are followed in order for these energies are managed without damaging the energetic fields.

Changing standards in the future

Looking at the future, a sociologist may say that the past has a great influence on it. A psychologist would disagree and say the future is the primary indicator. The Tibetan reminds us that standards will be changing. The past is not an indicator for the future. Change can be relied on and is always with us. The Path exists and calls to us. Change is most definitely a part in the future.

Virtue is the manifestation in man of the spirit of co-operation with his

brothers, necessitating unselfishness, understanding, and complete self

forgetfulness. Vice is the negation of this attitude. These two words signify in reality simply perfection and imperfection, conformity to a divine standard of brotherhood, or a failure to achieve that standard. Standards are shifting things and change with man’s growth towards divinity. They vary also

according to man’s destiny, as it is affected by his time and age, his nature and surroundings. They alter also according to the point of evolutionary development. The standard for attainment is not today what it was one thousand years ago, nor a thousand years ago, nor a thousand years hence will it be what it is today. EP1 284

Possibility of Perfection

According to the Tibetan perfection is not yet possible among disciples due to factors such as ignorance about the true significance of the work to be done.

This is natural, for no perfection is yet to be expected among disciples. If perfection existed, you would all be found working in a different relation to the Great White Lodge. DNA1 692

In Treatise on Cosmic Fire, he speaks about the etheric body and the energy of prana indicating that there are cycles of perfection where imperfection gives its place to perfection and the process continues higher and higher.

An endless circulation goes on that has neither a conceivable beginning nor possible end from the point of view of finite man, for its source and end are hid in the unknown cosmic fount. Were conditions everywhere perfected this circulation would proceed unimpeded and might result in a condition of almost endless duration, but limitation and termination result as the effects of imperfection giving place to a gradual perfection. Every cycle originates from another cycle of a relative completeness, and will give place ever to a higher spiral; thus eventuate periods of apparent relative perfection leading to those which are still greater. TCF 102

Summary

We have briefly reviewed the influence of the Path, centres, rays, signs, planets and houses on a human’s perfections and imperfections. It is important for us to remember that evolution of consciousness is best viewed from the perspective of cooperation with the Plan. We conclude with these statements from the Tibetan.

You will now turn your attention to yourself, the soul, the conscious disciple in preparation for that expansion of consciousness which is the next step in your spiritual unfoldment, leading eventually to initiation. This reflective consideration you do, not from the angle of the consciousness of your imperfections,

qualifications or capacities, your failures or your successes, but entirely from the angle of cooperation with the Plan, with the divine Will and Purpose. It is with these highest aspects that the disciple is asked to cooperate. DNA 137-8
