INTRODUCTION TO CYCLES

I. Preface:

This paper is a general introduction to cycles. The topic of cycles is enormous because cycles control all facets of life, subjective and objective, in the kingdoms of nature on earth and the bodies of the universe. Cycles may sound like a very mundane subject thinking about the cycles on one’s clothes washing machine or the financial cycle of inflation and recession. I hope to alert the readers of this paper to the manner in which the science of cycles is the very basis of Life. As Master Djwhal Khul states: “All life is cyclic and that is a point which disciples are apt to forget and overlook …” (DINAI 448)

When I began research for this paper, I did not realize the enormity of this subject. A simple on-line search with Yahoo resulted in 231 million hits! Many of these sites are about motorcycles, but the Foundation for the Study of Cycles FSC and the Cycles Research Institute stood out as institutions investigating cycles scientifically … quite a surprise to me!

To be covered in this paper are: the definition of a “cycle”; the importance of cycles; aspects of cycles such as: types of cycles, where they are found, their qualities and principals of cyclic behavior. Also to be covered is the universal Law of Periodicity and other related laws which govern cycles; and two universal cycles — that of 1) in-breathing / out-breathing and 2) the evolutionary cycle. In subsequent papers, I will go into deeper detail about the specific cycles and their influences. Many of these cycles are found in the fields of our different study sections in the Morya Federation courses.

On a technical note:

  • I have included references in parenthesis after the material either quoted directly or specific information put in my own words. The capital letters for the book title abbreviation for the Blue Books can be found in the Bibliography at the end of this paper and the number following the letters is the page number of the reference. All quotes are italicized.
  • Words in bold are defined or discussed in Notes.

Appendix I is a list of objective cycles from the website of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles. It gives a good demonstration of the existence of cycles in all phases of our objective existence. An even more extensive list of objective cycles is found in Wikipedia under “cycles”.

Appendix II is a list of esoteric cycles that I have started and hope to add to as time goes by. Subjective cycles are a more immense subject since manifestation is based on involutionary and evolutionary cycles. A sample list is found in A Treatise on Cosmic Fire pages 300 to 304 talking about evolutionary cycles related to a Solar Logos, a Heavenly Man and man’s Monadic cycle, Egoic cycle, and Personality cycle. This is quite a wide scope and since it opens to the universe, how many more types of cycles are in existence and how many more will be found?

.

II. Definition of a Cycle:

The word cycle is from the Greek word “kyklos” which means “circle”.(Divine Plan 12) Barborka, author of this cited book, goes on to explain: “As a circle represents a turning, a falling and a rising, a descent in order to ascend, a conclusion of one revolution in order that a new one may commence, hence a series of cycles represents a series of renewals.” (Ibid.) One circle represents a complete event that repeats itself any number of times.

Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines a cycle as “… an interval of time during which a sequence of a recurring succession of events or phenomena is completed …”

Edward R. Dewey, founder of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, states: “A cycle is a rhythmic fluctuation that repeats over time with reasonable regularity. When it is sufficiently regular and persists over a long enough span of time, it cannot reasonably be the result of chance. And the longer a non-chance rhythm continues, the more predictable it becomes.” (FSC)

Torkom Saraydarian continues with the definition: “A cycle is a duration of time which begins with the flow and ends with the dissipation of the form. All forms in existence on any plane follow these cycles. One can see an end in a beginning, and a beginning in an end.” (Other Worlds 460)

Cycles are the organizational mode seen around us every day in areas – such as:

  • Climate as in: global warming cycles or carbon cycles.
  • biological as in: biorhythm cycles or circadian rhythm cycles.
  • Economics as in: inflation cycles or monetary policy cycles.
  • Geology as in: earthquake cycles or sedimentary cycles.
  • Health as in: epidemic cycles or sleep cycles.
  • social as in: dynastic cycles or political cycles.
  • Physics as in: dynamic theory of gravity cycle or resonance cycles.

Some universal qualities inherent in the discussion of cycles are:

  • REPETION or CYCLIC ACTIVITY: Master D.K. explains that cycles “…are simply forms of ideas to express the cyclic activity of an entity.” (TCF 273) The entity can be as small, or smaller than an ant or as large, or larger than our Solar Logos. It does not matter about the size, but that there is development or growth through the repeated activity.
  • TIME: periods of differing length, but relatively uniform for each type of entity. (TCF 273) The time period can be as short, or shorter than a nanosecond or as long, or longer than a Day of Brahma (see Notes).
  • SPACE: areas of differing dimensions, but relatively uniform for each type of entity. (TCF 284) The space can be as small, or smaller than a millimeter or as immense, or more immense than the universe.
  • CAUSES: “are a deep mystery and are specifically related to the various kingdoms in nature, and to the species and types and forms within those aggregates of living processes.” (EH 247)

III. Further Definitions by E.R. Dewey

E. R. Dewey defined other terms in his paper “Definitions and Concepts Used in Cycle Study” written in 1965. Among those definitions that I found relevant are:

  • ORDER is fundamental law or conformity to law. Laws are the tools used by Great Beings to bring the Plan into fruition on earth. This is Ray Seven, Ceremonial Magic and Order, which relates to the science of cycles and orderliness.
  • CYCLE … “A complete course of operation returning to the original state”; it is a pattern in time. On a subjective level he states that a cycle “is a subdivision of the basic concept of “order””. “Every cycle originates from another cycle of a relative completeness, and will give place ever to a higher spiral …” (TCF 102) A subjective cycle, such as the cycle of the soul is on a spiral so that the cycle ends on a higher spiritual note than when it began.
  • PATTERN is “an arrangement or composition that suggests or reveals a design; a configuration; formal or regular arrangement.” So then, cycles give the pattern movement in time and space. An example of this is the yearly movement of the constellations around the ecliptic.
  • RHYTHM is “movement marked by reasonably regular recurrence, or reasonable regularity of alternation.”

IV. Principles of Cyclic Behavior

The following principles of cyclic behavior have been developed at the Foundation for the Study of Cycles:

  • Rhythmic cycles are a characteristic of more than 500 different phenomena; rhythm creates harmony.
  • Cycles persist without change of period for as far back as there is data. After distortion, cycles will revert to the pre-distortion pattern.
  • Cycles of any period tend to have counterparts in other phenomena, and even in other disciplines. For instance the period of lunation corresponds to the cycle of tides due to the fact that the gravity of the moon causes the rise and fall of tides. The same lunation cycle influences other cycles as well such as birth rates and manic-depressive activity.
  • Timing of cycles suggests a geographical pattern, regardless of phenomena.
  • Cycles of the same period tend to synchronize, or crest at the same calendar time, regardless of phenomena. An example of this is the yearly cycle of hurricanes.

An objective scientist has worked out these principles, but the subjective scientist encounters the same principles at work. D.K. gave a lot of information about the subjective cycles that create, unfold and maintain the great hierarchy of life in the Blue Book Series. “These factors suggest that the natural world is subject to powerful forces that trigger fluctuations in various phenomena. An identical rhythm in different phenomena implies an interrelationship, or common cause. The knowledge of predictable, repetitive patterns is a valuable tool in the scientific projection of many different phenomena.” (FSC) Not only is the “natural world” subject to these forces, but also the forces are from the subtle worlds and order our dense physical world. A few of the sources cyclic forces are:

  • Cycles of Manifestation this is reincarnation for humans and remanifestation for other entities: D.K. states “No form is as yet perfect, and it is this fact which necessitates cyclic evolution …” (TCF 925) He also emphasizes that “nothing is static or fixed or finally determined” (EH 181) in these cycles. This is “an involuntary subjective cycle” (EA 92) and the cycle begins in the astrological sign of Cancer.
  • Astrological Cycles of the Greater Zodiac is approximately 25,000 years for the Sun to complete one cycle and of the Lesser Zodiac is one year. (EA 112)
  • Ray Cycles are not each the same length (see Appendix III for Ray Activity). Charles DeMotte has written in his book, The Inner Side of History, an interesting section on “The Length and Impact of Ray Cycles” giving the length of short cycles (from 5 to 35 years), racial cycles (from 15 to 100 years) and planetary cycles (from 1,000 to 7,000 years). (page 221)
  • Logoic Cycles the length of one cycle is a mahamanvantara or day of Brahma and the length of the cycle depends on the type of Logos … planetary, solar, or cosmic.
  • MONADIC CYCLES are the period of “three major solar systems”(TCF 1088) to reach the goal of perfection.
  • Karmic Cycles relate to human interrelations during one lifetime that create karma and need to be adjusted during further incarnations. This can apply to simply two people or to a group or groups of people.

V. Universality of Cycles

Cycles are fundamentally necessary because forms are universal, but not immortal. All forms eventually erode and decay or are no longer useful. This goes for forms of dense physical matter and forms of subtle etheric matter. Each reaches its greatest unfoldment through growth, experience, observation, meditation and service until it either is too great an expanse of energy to maintain it or a higher level of development is reached.

Torkom Saraydarian says: “ A cycle is a duration of time which begins with the flow and ends with the dissipation of the form. All forms in existence on any plane follow these cycles. One can see an end in a beginning, and a beginning in an end.” (Other Worlds 460)

“Cyclic manifestation” is the scientific definition of “life and death”. D.K. states: “Reincarnation or cyclic activity lies behind all phenomenal activity and appearance.” (EPI 266) Ideation, birth, unfoldment, activity and death are the steps of this basic cycle. This is true for life on all the planes including the physical sub-planes we experience in every-day living and the subtle planes we experience through the lives we unknowingly are ruled by.

The human mind can comprehend the evolutionary cycle as the races advance from Lemurian man to Atlantean man to Aryan man, but what about the scope of the cycles of a Solar Logos or of a Heavenly Man? The cycles of a Solar Logos “are the sum total of time as we understand it or the duration of a solar system.” (TCF 301) This puts cycles on a level that truly includes the Universe! Time is a cycle which we all are familiar with and have a concept of the units composing it … a second, a minute, and hour, a day, etc. The esoteric definition is: “time …[is] simply forms of ideas to express the cyclic activity of an entity.” (TCF 281) The cycles within the cycle of a Planetary Logos include the cycles of a planetary scheme, a planetary chain and a planetary round. Lesser cycles are globe cycles, root-race cycles, sub-race cycles and branch-race cycles. The Planetary Logos, to continue this comparison, is an element within Ray Cycles and Zodiacal Cycles.

Not all cycles are of equal importance. The most critical parts of a cycle is the ending and where several cycles are occurring at the same time and if they are not synchronized, there can be chaos. (LOM 40) The rhythm is broken and energy is wasted.

VI. Human Comprehension of Cycles

The understanding of cycles is useful to man because:

  • He can identify the structure, order and pattern and so be able to be in rhythm with apparently invisible forces. For instance, if one understands the cycles of progress on the Path (EA 106), one can orient oneself to the corresponding levels of work and have a much more focussed approach to life.
  • He can learn that there is a balance in the duality of life such as in the cycle of life and death.
  • He can observe that not every occurrence is due to karma, but could be a part of a cycle which needs to be seen in a wider context such as a flower blooming in the cycle of growth. (James Harvey Stout)
  • He can accept life events with more wisdom seeing life as being cyclic and this leads to greater peace of mind. According to Torkom Saraydarian: “There are cycles in which Akashic Records directly control human life. History repeats itself and no power can change the current of events on earth.” (Other Worlds 270) This is not saying that one can sit back and do nothing, but one can be proactive in the appropriate manner and amount. With the wisdom about cycles stress can be reduced, glamours exposed, and much more beauty and light allowed into life.

A very important aspect of cycles is as one participates in the spiritual realms, even though one has an Initiation or an enlightenment or an expansion of consciousness, it is just an event in the never ending series of cycles as one advances along the Path of Consciousness. Each cycle will lead to another cycle; each of which advances in perfection and completeness until reaching the state of Perfect Man. (EH 181) Here is the immensity of subjective cycles!

Cycles are not always obvious even though they give basic order and harmony to our lives. James Harvey Stout gives reasons we do not discern cycles:

  • There may be a combination of cycles working together.
  • Cycles affect one another.
  • Random elements can occur.
  • Cycles need to be observed for very long times; some need thousands of years to discern.
  • There may be aberrations in a cycle.
  • Not all cycles are symmetrical.

VII. Laws Governing Cycles

“The general law, which produces cyclic effect is the Law of Attraction and Repulsion, of which the subsidiary law is the Law of Periodicity …” (TCF 275) The Law of Attraction and Repulsion is in charge of:

  • creating the forms which participate in periodicity, or cycles
  • creating the cyclic motion of attraction / going in, and repulsion / going out.

The basic law of the universe is the Law of Periodicity. (TCF 5) The Law of Periodicity mandates the rhythm of cyclic manifestation, the repetition of forms and events, in a spiral-cyclic manner. This is the universal mode of evolution, purification and spiritualization of matter. It also explains why our understanding of cycles under law helps us cooperate with the Plan. Even the Hierarchy works under the Law of Cycles because this law enables Them to “… know exactly that which must be done by right timing…”. (RI 238)

A law does not always govern by itself, but is a part of a collective law (Other Worlds 499) and a law can be included in several collective laws. Laws linked to the Law of Periodicity, or the Law of Cycles, are:

  • Law of Economy is a cosmic law that “determines the pastconcerns itself with the form or matter aspect.”(EPI 376)
  • Law of Attraction is a cosmic law that “determines the presentis concerned with consciousness or the soul aspect.” (Ibid.)
  • Law of Synthesis is a cosmic law that “ …determines the future …concerned with the life or spirit aspect.” (Ibid.)
  • Law of Tides is “…concerned with the development of awareness …” (EPI 378)

Man seldom can detect the laws for cycles and so much seems contradictory and it will remain this way until several prerequisite are filled in the future:

1) D.K. states that a true understanding of the Law of Periodicity “… will not be possible until man has succeeded in developing fourth dimensional vision …” (EPI 190) Man also needs to understand number, sound and color (TCF 7) in order to comprehend the whole order of cycles controlled by subtle laws. The Universe is based on Divine Geometry and these three factors, number – sound – color directly affect this.

2) At the Second Initiation the periods between egoic cycles are understood “… as they enable the initiate to comprehend his position, to see somewhat the nature of the karmic impulse, and the read his own record in the astral light.“ (TCF 738) It is not until the Fifth Initiation a disciple will know the mathematical formula which sums up all the cycles of manifestation. (IHS 174). We have a lot to learn!

The Law of Periodicity has always been the most difficult esoteric law for man to understand because its activity is very interrelated with the higher law, the Law of Attraction and Repulsion. When a human comprehends the Law of Periodicity, he is ready to enter the Hierarchy and help manipulate the forces which govern mankind. To do this, the disciple must be able to:

  • Work with the “higher mathematical formulas of the solar system”.
  • Calculate the relationship between an incarnating entity and the whole system.
  • Read the Akashic records of a planetary system.”
  • “Judge of karmic effects in time and space.”
  • “Differentiate between the four streams of karmic effects as they concern the four kingdoms of nature.”
  • Distinguish between the types of energy (inertia, mobility and rhythm) indicating the development of a man in order to direct his continuing growth.
  • Enter the Hall of Records and read documents about transference of energy between several sources and indicates dealings with the “great informing Life of the animal kingdom”. (TCF 1145)
VIII. The Universal Cycle of In-Breathing and Out-Breathing

Although it takes an advanced Initiate to understand the Law of Periodicity, everyone is a witness to and participant in the Law of Periodicity. Our breathing, which maintains us alive, is the most intimate relationship we have to this cycle. Every entity in the Universe breathes — including the Logoi and Their physical manifestations (the planets.) “The dual alternation of objective manifestation and of subjective obscuration, the periodic out-breathing, followed by the in-breathing of all that has been carried forward through evolution embodies in the system one of the basic cosmic vibrations.” (TCF 128) In other words, the “out-breath” is what man knows as dense physical manifestation — what man knows as “reality”. An “in-breath” is when “every atom is resolved into one Homogeneity.” (The Key to Theosophy 84) Continuing with this analogy, “The heart-beats of the Logos … are the source of all cyclic evolution” (TCF 128) Cyclic evolution, or incarnation, is due to desire for form; desire is a form of love and love is the essence of the heart. Breathing sets the rhythm of the life cycles and the heart incites incarnation through desire. Vera Stanley Alder explains this whole concept in a very succinct manner: “That which we call birth, incarnation, death, reincarnation, is simply the movement into and out of a particular octave of vibrations.” (The Initiation of the World 25)

Some other words and concepts might define this concept of breaths a bit further from man’s point of view:

  • In-Breathing ……… Out-Breathing
  • Subjectivity ………. Objectivity
  • Pralaya …………… Manvantara
  • Night ……………… Day
  • Death …………….. Life
  • Life spiritual …….. Life terrestrial
  • Sleep ……………… Awakening
  • Reality ……………. Illusion
  • Shattering of form .. Attraction of matter into form

The Solar Logos sets the example of the Hermetic truth “As Above, So Below”. Both the Solar Logos and man are controlled by karma and both have life cycles; “there are cycles of activity in matter … there are cycles of non-being when Time and Space are not …” (TCF 284) This is true of all entities in the kingdoms of nature — the mineral kingdom, the vegetable kingdom, the animal kingdom, the human kingdom and the spiritual kingdom. The length of time of this cycle varies greatly; a human breath cycle is 12 to 20 per minute, a monadic cycle and a Solar Logos’ cycle is 100 years of Brahma or 311,040,000,000,000 human years. (The Hidden History of Humanity 157) Rather mind boggling!

IX. The Universal Cycle of Evolution

The evolutionary process is another major intricate series of interlocking and overlapping cycles which proceeds during all-time. It is the complex within which in-breathing and out-breathing occurs in the universe. “The goal of evolution is the attainment of consciousness on all planes…” (TCF 285) We humans only observe consciousness as it develops through each kingdom … and most of us do not credit the mineral kingdom with consciousness. But it is there as an insipient spark of the One Life which grows as life graduates through the kingdoms of nature. This spark the human kingdom has the responsibility to foster into a bonfire that conveys consciousness into the spiritual realms of buddhic, atmic, monadic and adi planes.

Appendix IV illustrates the organization of the evolutionary cycles of one solar systemic cycle. Essentially the cycle start from the highest etheric plane and as their substance takes on denser qualities the series involves down through the planes developing finer qualities from those of the previous cycle. Esoterically speaking “…evolution is simply that of adjusting the matter aspect to the Spirit aspect, so that the former proves entirely adequate as a body of expression for the latter.” (TCF 231) Matter is being refined into a useful vehicle for the Divine Spark to blossom into the bonfire of consciousness.

One may ask, “Where is Humanity in Evolutionary Time?” Phillip Lindsay has synthesize the answer in his book The Hidden History of Humanity (123):

  • Solar system of the “fourth order”
  • Solar system Two
  • Fourth (Earth) Scheme in the System
  • Fourth (Earth) Chain in the Scheme
  • Fourth (Earth) Globe in the Chain

We are at the center of the involution – evolution cycle! The true understanding of evolution is known by Initiates to Whom is revealed humanity’s place in this cycle. They shape the Path according to the rhythm of involution – evolution always with the goal of higher spiritual achievement for the Human Kingdom.

XIII. Conclusion

Djwhal Khul predicts in Discipleship in a New Age I “… that there will … emerge during the coming century … a better understanding of the Law of Cycles.” (256) This Blue Book was written in 1938 and in 1941 the Foundation for the Study of Cycles was founded. The continuing and deepening scientific investigation of Mother Earth has led to the observation and understanding of so many cycles such as Cymatics, first discovered in the 1600’s and continues to fascinate scientists and artists to the present day. Astronomical cycles have been documented extensively by modern telescopes and measuring devices, but were first noted before Christ. All categories of cycles have been discovered in the human physiological make-up and manners to synchronize or disrupt nature’s cycles. The computer has made is possible to study cycles from all over the world simultaneously and the immense amount of time (relative to man’s life-span) has given observers a great field for investigation of repetitive events.

In Esoteric Healing (339) D.K. states: “… esoteric medicine in the future will concern itself with the law of cycles, lunar and solar.” All disease is caused by lack of harmony (EH 12) and that occurs when astrological or physiological cycles are interrupted or distorted. The Law of Cycles, which determines the tides, controls world events should also condition the individual and so establish rhythmic life habits—one of the major predisposing incentives to good health.

Another prediction made in the Blue Books is the understanding of death (EH 436) as an important phase of life cycles of all entities. Man will comprehend that death is a release from a very limited form to an expansion of consciousness unimaginable for the dense physical reality of life-in-form. The in-breath phase is a necessary period for renewal of matter, consolidation of life-lessons experienced and a up-dating of karma. What a relief it will be for the human family to participate in and celebrate the release of a beloved spirit.

In the organization of our esoteric studies D.K. has presented a specific cycle of study employing the concept of Light Half of the Year and Dark Half of the Year. Between the two work periods, there is a six-week pralaya. This is the cycle we are participating in the Morya Federation. Included in this course is the meditation cycle that is shaped by the much greater lunar cycles and the solar cycles. Here we are involved in a complex system of interconnected cycles; it is the pattern for esoteric education of the future and includes the study of many cycles and the participation in meditation, study and service.

Sometimes it is hard to let go of or “permit” a cycle to end. As Dane Rudhyar puts it in his book, The Astrology of Personality: “The moment of consummation of the cycle is a moment of concentration, conclusion and in-gathering of the fruits of the process of manifestation.” (117) The cycle of traditional learning institutions is an example of this with two semesters of study and then vacation, then starting the cycle over with the two semesters of school. How hard it is to see the end of vacations! Or the yearly seasonal cyclic changes when the cold weather comes; or the life cycle when death occurs. We human rebel against such cycles but in the future when cycles are better understood the complete cycle from start to finish will be honored as the way of the universe.

NOTES

Alice A. Bailey: Alice Ann Bailey was born on June 16, 1880 in Manchester, England and died in 1949 in New York, N.Y., USA. She was an initiate who dedicated her life to service. She worked with Master Djwhal Khul (DK) to produce the Blue Book series that were telepathically dictated to her by the Master.

Blue Books: The set of 24 books, four of which were written directly by A.A. Bailey. These books cover metaphysical topics about the Trans-Himalayan Ancient Wisdom including philosophy, religion, contemporary events, science, psychology, nations, astrology, and healing. They are for use by people on all levels of discipleship from neophytes just beginning their studies to Initiates.

Brahma’s Day (Day of Brahma): 4,320,000,000 earth years. (The Hidden History of Humanity p. 157)

Cymatics : The study of visible sound and vibration which cause geometric patterns to form in liquids or particles. (Wikipedia: “Cymatics”)

Edward R. Dewey (1895 – 1978) was an economist who studied at Harvard and worked for the State Department. After the 1929 stock market crash he was assigned to find the reason for this event. Later he worked with Charles Hoskins, a stock market analyst, and together they formed a cycle forecasting business. Dewey founded the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, Inc. in 1941. He studied cycles in the fields of economy, geology, biology, sociology, physical sciences and many others. He is the author of books on topics such as the cycles of war, cycles in wholesale prices, cycle synchronies, cycle analysis, and other types of cycles plus the science of cycles.

Foundation for the Study of Cycles (FSC): was incorporated Jan. 10, 1941 in Connecticut for the purpose of discovering the mystery behind cycles. It is stated on their web page that the foundation is “dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of finding and analyzing recurring patterns”.

Logoic or Logos : the greater entity who is responsible for creation. There are planetary, solar and cosmic Logoi.

Master Djwhal Khul, or D.K.: is a spiritual master of the Ageless Wisdom whose “work is to teach and spread the knowledge of the Ageless Wisdom wherever [he] can find a response …” (TWM vii)

Monadic or Monad :The immortal part of man which reincarnates in the lower kingdoms and gradually progresses through them to man and thence to the final goal.” (LOM 356)

Path, The :The process by which a person raises himself toward spiritualization by the right application of the higher principles.” (Thought and the Glory of Thinking 607)

Plan, The :The formulation of the Purpose of the Planetary Logos into a workable program, a Plan by the Planetary Hierarchy for all kingdoms of Nature.” (Ibid.)

,

Planes of Perception: subtle to dense physical vibrations which organize the space of manifestation; humanity functions on the dense physical plane of the cosmic physical plane. The 7 divisions are: physical, astral, mental, buddhic, atmic, monadic and Adi (the highest). The lowest, the physical has the densest matter and as one progresses up to Adi the matter becomes less and less dense.

Pralaya : “a period of unmanifest … period of dissolution or destruction …” (The New Dictionary of Spiritual Thought 146)

Rays, the Seven : “…sum total of the divine Consciousness …seven intelligent Entities through Whom the Plan is working out … embody divine purpose, express the qualities required for the materializing of that purpose …” ( EPI 59)

Solar Logos : The entity Who creates and rules a solar system

Spiral-cyclic motion : the cycle begins on one level of quality and ends on a slightly higher level. The difference between the beginning point and the ending point is due to growth.
