Throughout this lifetime, I have quested for the higher spiritual realities of Sound as a therapeutic tool. It was as if I had my ear cocked for those teachers and experiences that opened doors to harmonics, vocal toning, and mystical sound. In the Resources section I will mention the ones that most prominently come to mind as a lineage, although it would be an injustice to try to isolate the specific experiences.

1. Purpose and Introduction
Since the 2019 Festival Week there has been a noticeable increase in the number of weekly esoteric group meditations and more recently I observe that often the Devic Kingdom is acknowledged as a necessary component in the process of transitioning to the new era, the Aquarian age. We are becoming aware of the Devic Kingdoms as creating the intelligent activity that is present in all forms. At the same time I note that, as an esoteric student, there has been little specific instruction for how to communicate and cooperate with the Devas. In fact, quite the opposite, the dominant instruction I registered early on was cautionary because historically invoking the Devas can lead to dire consequences [Bailey – EP I p. 126]. Specifically we are cautioned not to contact the Elementals, the subhuman involutionary units, until we are “linked to the higher devas through purity and nobility of soul” [Bailey - LOM p. 176].
In the next 500 years we are to co-operate with the Higher Devas, especially under the incoming 7th Ray. [LOM p.182]. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the esoteric teaching about the Devas and to give my personal example of beginning to systematize methods and experiences for co-operating with the Higher Devas. The overall principle for combining the contributions of each evolution might be expressed in this quotation from LOM.
“The human evolution should give strength to the deva, and the deva, joy to the human. Man should communicate to the devas the objective point of view, while they in turn will pour in on him their healing magnetism. They are the custodians of prana, magnetism and vitality, just as man is the custodian of the fifth principle, or manas.” [LOM p.384]
The paper has three goals. I will start with a review of some of the esoteric teachings that explain the parallel nature of the Devic hierarchies and that highlight the distinctions in their function and communication. The major part of this paper describes different approaches toward co-operating with
K. Powers 3
the Devas with an emphasis on the Human voice for sounding and some of my personal experiences with a meditation group from New Zealand. The final section returns to the Esoteric teachings to emphasize Soul Law V of Group Progress and the New Group of World Servers (NGWS) in their new capacities to undertake this service.
Through this effort, I hope to encourage others to consider group work with the intentional focus of their own communication with the devic kingdom. I am not offering specific instructions as much as examples from which the reader may respond with their own intuition for further work.
2. Devas and Cosmology
In this paper, I am primarily describing the functions and relationships with the higher devas, not the elementals. For an excellent overview of Devas historically and by category, please see the 2006 article in the Esoteric Quarterly by Donna Brown and John Nash [Brown and Nash]. These authors note that the early stages of human contact with devas come through nature when we have general feelings of coherence and peace. Later some people begin to sense something of a unique individuality in the energy of a specific mountain or patriarch tree [Brown and Nash p. 54]. The former simply represents human affinity for beauty and pattern that expresses in nature.
“Since devic life is said to be a life of joy in constant service, it is not surprising that nature should evoke the same sense of joy and altruism in us.” [Brown and Nash p. 56]
The article continues in detail to review the Higher Devas of the Christian angelic hierarchy, [Brown and Nash, p.59] and summarizes experiences of various writers in the literature.
Ultimately though the devas have a crucial place in esoteric cosmology.
“The Angelic Hosts may be regarded as the active, creative intelligences and form-builders of all objective creation. They are manifestations of the One, the Three, the Seven and all products thereof. From dawn to eve of Creative Day, they are ceaselessly in action as directors, rectors, designers, artists, producers and builders, ever subservient to and expressive of the One Will, the One Substance and the One Thought.” [Hodson, pdf p. 10]
Devas as a Parallel Kingdom
The Devic Kingdom, although different from the human kingdom in its essence, has many levels in a hierarchy, not unlike the organization of the human kingdom in correspondence to the centers of the planetary logos. Even though the Christian church does not seem to focus on angels, it still maintains the names of a hierarchy of angels [Wikipedia Christian Angelology]. The esoteric literature assigns devas to each of the cosmic planes, including even the lower the planes of planetary expression with which the human kingdom interacts. Here are some references to the types of devas. The higher grades of devas have passed through the human kingdom and operate consciously.
“The Deva evolution is of equal importance to that of the human. These devas are many in number, are of involutionary and evolutionary nature, and of all grades and types. Ruling over them on the physical plane is the great deva Kshiti. . . . He, with these subordinate devas,
K. Powers 4
presides over a subsidiary council of seven devas who handle all that concerns the deva evolution, and the work of the greater and the lesser builders.” [ Bailey - TCF p.911]
“We must remember always that the devas are the qualities and attributes of matter, the active builders, who work consciously or unconsciously upon the plane. Here I would point out that all the devas of the higher levels of the mental plane, for instance, and of the systemic planes from there on to the center (the divine plane, the plane of the Logos, sometimes called Adi) co
operate consciously, and are of high rank in the system, and of position equal to all the ranks and grades of the Hierarchy from a first degree initiate up to, but not including, the Lord of the World Himself. Below these higher levels, where the concrete is touched, we have lesser grades of devas who work unconsciously, with the following exceptions, who are conscious forces and entities and of high position:” [TCF p. 468], [Raja- Lords are one example of the conscious forces]
The lesser grades of devas have been referred to as the Army of the Voice and those in Serried Ranks. They are characterized by impulsiveness and an enthusiasm for building that tends toward exaggerations until redirected.
“All the lesser grades of devas, “The Army of the Voice,” on each plane, the lesser builders and elementals in their myriads, work unconsciously, being guided and directed by words and sound. In this way vibrations are set up in the essence of the planes by the conscious Builders”. [TCF p. 472]
“They are the great “impulsive factors” in manifestation, organizing substance, directing the multiplicity of lives and beings who constitute the forms through which God expresses divinity. In a peculiar sense, they are the embodiment of the divine purpose upon the planes of the Monad and of the Triad, just as the aggregate of energies in man's etheric body is the result of his inner direction and the cause of his outer manifestation.” [ Bailey - RI p. 79]
In this table below, edited by Michael Robbins, the devic and human kingdoms that are in planetary expression are integrated into a system of seven.

Solar Angels
I would be remiss not to honor the role of the Solar Angels and there was quite a compelling need to add this section. Solar Angels hold a particular position in the cosmology described for esoteric students, which is not to say that they are not present for all human beings. These are not necessarily the safeguarding protectors described as guardian angels [guardian angels Wikipedia] in religious vernacular. The Solar Angels are actually the builders of our self-consciousness.
“This fifth Hierarchy of Agnishvattas [Solar Angels] in their many grades embody the “I principle” and are the producers of self-consciousness, and the builders of man's body of realization. In time and space, and on the mental plane, they are Man himself in essential essence; they enable him to build his own body of causes, to unfold his own egoic lotus, and gradually to free himself from the limitations of the form which he has constructed,
and thus to put himself—in due course of time—into the line of another type of energy, that of buddhi. To word it otherwise, through Their work man can become conscious without the manasic vehicle, for manas is but the form through which a higher principle is making itself known.” [TCF p. 703]
This speaks to the concept that Devic builders are responsible for the intelligent activity manifesting in substantial bodies and forms.
Planet Earth and Cooperation of the Devic and Human Evolutions As I grappled with esoteric definitions of Devas on various planes and all the cautions for humans, it suddenly came to me that this was no longer an academic exercise. The planet herself is in the midst of a transformation and cooperation by both Devas and Humans are the magic that can ease the process or not. It is as if all the necessary components are available if used in proper combination for the good of the planet and its sacred destiny.
The devas look to serve humanity just as humans seek an evolution to the buddhic plane and cooperation with Devas.
K. Powers 6
“Thus in the service of humanity in some form or another lies attainment for these physical plane devas. They have much to give and do for humanity, and in time it will be apparent to the human unit what he has to give towards the perfecting of the deva kingdom. A great hastening of their evolution goes forward now coincident with that of the human family.” [TCF p913 -914]
“Further, the two great evolutions (human and deva) find their group unity on the buddhic plane, and portions of both hierarchies blend and merge so as to form the body of the divine Hermaphrodite”. [TCF p328]
“The fourth plane is the plane of at-one-ment for certain deva and human units, and certain groups (the fourth Creative Hierarchy and the sixth Deva Hierarchy) have a pronounced karma to work out together. One can now see the supreme importance of the human Hierarchy, the fourth in this sequence of planes and ideas.” (TCF 432)
Much of the teaching on devas occurs in TCF. For example, the devas of the four physical etheric subplanes are in two main groups, those who transmit prana and those who form the etheric bodies of every form in manifestation [TCF p. 915]. There is however also a group of Builders on the first subplane or atomic level and the texts suggest a connection to Sound and also to extra planetary forces such as constellations. These connections are important for the experiences I will describe later.
“The “Transmitters of the Word” upon the first subplane or atomic level are those who take up the vibratory sound as it reaches them from the astral plane and—passing it through their bodies—send it forth to the remaining subplanes. These transmitters may be, for purposes of clarity, considered as seven in number. In their totality they form the atomic physical bodies of the Raja Lord of the plane and in a peculiarly occult sense these seven form (in their lower differentiations on etheric levels) the sumtotal of the etheric centers of all human beings, just as on the cosmic etheric levels are found the centers of a Heavenly Man.” “They are all fully self conscious, having passed through the human stage in earlier kalpas.”. . .
“Each of these great lives (embodying deva energy of the first degree) is an emanation from the central spiritual sun in the first instance and from one of the three major constellations in the second instance. Systemically they fall into three groups: . . .
“In these triple emanatory forces may be found the origin of all that is visible and objective, and through their agency our solar system takes its place within the greater cosmic scheme, and a certain basic cosmic fire is formed. They are the sumtotal of the head, the heart and the throat centers of the solar Logos, and their correspondences will be found within a Heavenly Man, a human being, and an atom. [TCF pp 919-921]
Caution and need for Self-Consciousness in working with Devas
In a subtle, but important point, we are reminded not to totally rely on the wisdom of the Devas, even the higher devas. For to do so would be to give up our independence as a self-conscious unit in service to the Hierarchy. In the text below, it is emphasized that when we approach the devas on the plane of buddhi, we do so as ‘essence to essence’ and not from a concrete or material aspect to essence.
K. Powers 7
“concerning primarily the relationship of the devas to man in the future, and their closer approximation to him through the incoming type of force [Ray VII]. This approximation, though inevitable, will not have for the human hierarchy results entirely beneficent, and before the true method of contact is comprehended, and the consequent association wisely utilized, much suffering will eventuate and much bitter experience will be undergone. When it is remembered that the devas are, in their totality, the mother aspect, the great builders of form, and the nourishers of that which is as yet unable to guard itself, any return of man to a closer dependence upon the devas is as if a full-grown man returned to the care of his mother, offering up his self-reliance in exchange for material benefit. The devas are the mother of the form, but the self-conscious unit, MAN, should realize his independence of the form, and should follow the path of Self-expression. This should be pondered on, for in days to come (when units here and there contact the devas, and inevitably pay the penalty) it may be helpful [Page 473] if the reason is understood, and man realizes his necessary separation from these Essences in the three worlds. Approach between the two lines of evolution becomes possible on the plane of buddhi, but then it is an approach of two essences, and not an approach of the concrete to the essence. Man, while functioning in material, substantial forms in the three worlds, may not trespass across the separating line between the two evolutions. Only on the planes of solar fire or on the cosmic etheric levels may contact be permitted; on the planes of the cosmic dense physical plane (our mental, astral and physical planes) disaster only results from contact. I have dwelt on this point, for the danger is real, and near at hand.” [TCF pp 472 – 474]
Other descriptions of Devas
Very few people have actually written about seeing devas. In their article authors Brown and Nash explain that humanity lost some of the etheric sensitivity as part of the evolutionary plan to develop mental capacities, and hence lost some of the capacity to view Devas and perhaps for our own protections [Brown and Nash p. 62]
One can read the memoir of Dorothy McClean from Findhorn [McClean] or the writings of David Spangler [Spangler website] for accounts of interactions with beings from these other kingdoms and gain some confidence in the magnitude and benevolence of these greater beings. Another resource is the Perelandra Center for Nature Research [Perelandra website]
Perhaps the best known authority in the esoteric literature is Geoffrey Hodson and his book The Kingdom of Gods includes beautiful illustrated plates of devas and sprites. He writes
“The outlines [of devas], however are less clearly define, the bodies less substantial, suggesting flowing forces father than solid forms. Angels themselves differ in appearance according to the Order to which they belong, the functions which they perform and the level of evolution at which they stand.” [Hodson pdf. p. 59]

3. Sounding and the Human Voice
The Power of Esoteric Sound
When I describe esoteric sound, I am referring to the science of sound in its metaphysical relationships. Danie’lou writes in detail about the influence of sound on consciousness [Danie’lou]. While I have yet to understand much of this subject from a concrete level, I have known from the beginning the truth and power of which he writes. It has to do with the minute differences in frequency called commas [Wikipedia/ Musical Comma] from scales used by the ancients [Wikipedia/ Indian Classical Music] before music became standardized into equalized or tempered divisions of the scales. [Wikipedia/ Equal Temperament]. Danie’lou writes,
“But if we habitually use inaccurate intervals on the grounds that our ear does not clearly perceive the difference, . . . It is with our mind alone that we accept this inaccurate music, which leaves us tired and tense through an unconscious effort of adaptation instead of agreeably transformed by the beneficial influence of the harmony.” [Danie’lou p. 8].
For another comprehensive look at the Science of Harmonics, the interested reader is referred to the blog post by P. Guiliana on “Boundless Harmony” from October 15, 2021 on The Planetary System website. [Guiliana, P]
The Human Voice
Devic communication certainly includes rhythm, movement or gesture, and mantrams in ceremony. I choose to focus on the human voice as an instrument of Sound for communication with the devas, as I begin to see how this was nurtured in my own learning [see Lineage section]. Geoffrey Hodgson has shared his experiences with devas applauding orchestral music as well as cathedral choirs [Morya Federation Course 260]. But let us not dwell on the aspects of music itself that are known to influence devas. What I wish to emphasize is the unique qualities of the individual human voice and its physical apparatus to modulate sound and resonance. These qualities emphasize the role of human ‘sounders’ in future work with the devas.
Consider the vocal apparatus which requires the movement of air and breath to generate sound. Thus there is immediate linking to the great powers of the breath itself. Consider also the chest cavity, the heart beating within the lungs and the lungs massaging the heart with each breath affording another potent interaction on the spiritual as well as physical level. The vocal apparatus itself adds multiple ways in which sounds can be shaped and modulated. This and other correlations between human sound and spiritual realities are detailed by Alfred Baur in his book Healing Sounds: Fundamentals of Chirophonetics.
“When we speak, a further element is added. Here the exhaled breath is grasped and formed by the voice and organs of articulation. Strange forms appear – not visible, but audible, resounding formations of air which immediately dissolve and die away in the surrounding atmosphere.” [Baur, p. 11]
K. Powers 9
The ability of the human voice to modulate sound became clear to me in my own study of harmonic overtoning (see lineage). I learned how tongue placement, lips, glottis and nasal passages all contributed to sounds that would resonate deeply in me and generate non-earthly high-pitched overtones that reached beyond and were deeply satisfying. The human voice is its own instrument and capable of the nuances to be an organ of communication with the Devas. We know that each human voice is unique enough to now be used for voice recognition programs in our financial world. While I can not assert that the human voice has the widest range of sounding expression compared to musical instruments or sounds in nature, it is certainly expressive enough to be trained for communication with devas. Hazrat Inyat Khan, one of the great mystics and musicians writes - “When one compares the voice with the instrument, there is no real comparison, because the voice is life itself “[Khan, p. 82]. In his next chapter he goes on to write more about the voice and the etheric world.
“The voice is not only indicative of man’s character, but it is the expression of his spirit. . . . The voice makes impressions on the ethereal sphere, impressions which can be called audible; at the same time they are visible. “{Khan, p.88]
When an initiate brings the consciousness of esoteric study to the human voice with proper training, the resulting sounds can effect evolution itself.
“We cannot here trace the expansion of the basic words, from their enunciation by cosmic entities down to the infinitesimal differentiations produced in the speech of man, the vocal expression of the animals, and the song of birds. Each is a manifestation of consciousness in some degree, and each produces an effect. What the initiate is learning to do is to make sounds consciously, and thus produce a studied and desired result; to utter words; and be fully aware of the consequence on all planes; and to create forms and direct energy through sacred sounds, and thus further the ends of evolution.” [IHS p 155]
The devas respond to beauty, patterns, symbols, and sound. When the human voice is used, it adds a particular dimension of consciousness based on the spiritual practice of the individual. This helps explain the emphasis on purity when working with the devas. [LOM p. 176] Devas will take their cue to manifest from the resonance of the sound which can easily be distorted by impurities of thought, emotion, and physical dross. We know Sound as the beginning of all manifest creation [ IHS p. 150] and the devas with their form-building function are acutely sensitive to sound.
“Every Word, differentiated or synthesized, affects the deva kingdoms, and hence the form building aspects of manifestation. No sound is ever made without producing a corresponding response in deva substance, and driving multitudes of tiny lives to take specific forms. These forms persist and carry out their functions just as long as the sound which caused them is prolonged, and the specific will-energy of the one Who initiated the sound is directed towards the living form.” [IHS p. 159]

4. A Template for Co-operating with Devic Builders from a New Zealand Group Experience
Personal history
I had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand in 2017, when my best friend from graduate school took a job there in a town south of Christ Church on the South Island. I had been studying with Robert Sardello and he was excited for my plans because he said New Zealand was where the earth has most retained her livingness and vitality. He was right. I spent the month crisscrossing the South Island and spending as much time as I could with my boots on the trail and my hands in the moss and lichens. Despite many years of wilderness travel, I experienced a new vibrancy in nature unlike anything before and sometimes the very air seemed a verdant green. I went gently on the trails, singing that little song from the musical The King and I - ‘Getting to know you’ [Wikipedia/Song]. I seemed to know that singing was the safest way to begin honoring this vast energetic kingdom. Two years later I returned to New Zealand for another month and this time my friend had arranged a 3-day sailing trip in the Bay of Islands, several hours north of Auckland. So this trip started with almost two weeks on the North Island, storing up more experience of the geology and ways of the land. I had no idea how useful these experiences would be for what lay ahead.
Back home in Minnesota, my esoteric studies continued with an emphasis on small group work, especially during the pandemic. As you recognize, the groups are quite international now and in one session we invited input from two members of Seed Groups International. When one of the guests mentioned working with devas, something in me responded. A few emails later, the recognition was clear and I began attending webinars from a small esoteric group based in New Zealand that was meditating daily in communication with higher devas. Although part of me was worried about all the cautions, the greater part of me saw the necessity to follow the joy that was apparent for me in this work. There was also a recognition of being already somewhat attuned through so many life experiences and it seemed strangely familiar to be able to engage and resonate so naturally with the sounds and constellations and geography.
I jumped in with both feet and began attending the New Zealand meditation webinars in a rhythm twice weekly (working around the 18 hour or so time change) and doing my own chanting of directed mantrams for stability and alignment daily. That was about a year ago. Only just now have I bothered to see if I could find the school on google. [School for Planetary and Divine Union]
Teaching elements from the School for Planetary and Divine Union It is not my purpose or privilege to share the history and documentation from the school itself. In part, I have only been with the school the past year and have not been part of its evolution in time and space in this lifetime. More importantly, in this work, the learning comes from resonance and intuition and can not be written into instructions. Although I have been astounded at the scope of the work, at the same time, I have been reassured to find the cosmology is based on the teachings from DK and his voice is evident throughout the work, as well as that of other ascended masters. What is relevant for the
K. Powers 11
purposes of this paper is the teaching elements of the practical work and how I have experienced the effects.
The overall purpose of the school is for human ‘sounders’, to become intermediaries bringing impressions for creative building of the new planetary culture and raising the frequency of the mineral constituents that make up the planet and support the kingdoms. Phonetic Sound is used as a purer form of conveying intent to the building devas and to assist the higher devas in anchoring their vibrations into the planet. These higher devas are seeking those who might undertake the work of responding in divine law and order through Ray VII to the higher purposes for the planet.
Over the years since the school started there has been a collection of mantrams and spoken intention received as divine impression. Each zodiac month, a ‘meditation’ script is organized based on higher intuition from these mantrams and new additions are included responding to the needs of the time. A core group of meditators sound these mantrams daily at 7 AM New Zealand time within an overall meditation format.
• Opening prayer for protection and purity
• Alignment of vehicles
• Alignment to higher planes
• Sounding of the mantrams, some spoken and some sounded, with creative visualization of planetary power points and circulatory flow. Color drawings further aid in the visualization
• 10 minutes of silence for further impressions
• Final work and closing
The sounding of the mantrams themselves is peculiar in an esoteric way. My ear tells me that these compositions utilize the tritone and various modal scales from the Greek or India. The key changes and intervals seem to reflect the subtle dissonance that Danie’lou refers too. A few words are in English but most are not and the emphasis is on vowels and diphthongs. To my query about the ‘language,’ I was told that the ancient languages were favored (for example, Sanskrit, Celtic, Tibetan, Hebrew) and also sounds that seem to have their roots in Māori. There is great attention to the timing, rhythm, frequency and resonance. In my own aural sensitivity, I know that these sounds are powerful and that this is what I have been searching for all these years. I experience joy that overcomes my hesitancy about participating in this work.
Planetary Healing Is an important aspect of this work. My awareness has been expanded to consider not only climate change, but the actual depletion of the soil, the toxicity of chemicals, the distortion and blockage of circulatory flow and the threats to human DNA and human consciousness. We call to higher devas for their assistance in rebuilding the planetary structures from within the mineral and plant kingdoms of the planet herself. Considering the extra-planetary energies impacting us, it is possible that earth herself must upgrade the minerals and lifeforms that will be part of the new Aquarian age. Perhaps we then postulate that this higher vibratory capacity will bring to humans the needed capacities in etheric vision and telepathy to pave the way for a consciousness of unity and meeting the Devas on the Buddhic plane.
K. Powers 12
Zodiac Cycles and Extra planetary influence
Esoteric cosmology recognizes the influence of devic energy represented in the major constellations and planets. The school recognizes this also. The mantrams used by the school also give attention to places of power foci on the planet, circulatory grid lines, and points on the surface of the planet in star or triangular formations. The meditation shifts at each zodiac ingress to better reflect the energies of that sign and needs of the time.
Colors and drawings
Drawings can be used to represent the deva energy that is sensed, although it is unlikely that these are a true depiction and they are mostly influenced by the sensitivity of the receiver. Some examples have been published in the books by Geoffrey Hodgson (ref).
The school members also receive impressions and the drawings are shared among the active meditators to make the work more coherent. I myself don’t ‘see’ yet. Apparently humanity will be developing the necessary etheric vision in the coming age. However I definitely notice an increased sensitivity to a presence of energetic archetypes or devas.
“We shall see each other and all forms of divine manifestation as light units of varying degrees of brightness and shall talk and think increasingly in terms of electricity, of voltage, of intensity and of power. “[TWM p. 334]
Although I may not ‘see’, I do find myself attracted to different colors with an intensity not previously experienced. My intuition also led me to take an art class about the work of Hilma af Klint and in retrospect, I see in her images the types of energy flow that I recognize as devic. Some of her notes and pictures are now compiled in a book by Christine Burgin [Burgin 2018] and another good resource is ‘picture gallery’ tab the Hilma af Klint Foundation website [Hilma af Klint]
My Observations about closer communication with Devas
As I begin to write this, I realize that I do not have a reference source other than my own experience and longing to learn from the devas. In part, the Devas could not teach through books, as that is not their ‘language’.
Devas communicate through color, symbolism, and sound and the result of their building is manifest phenomena. They do not have a language of words, but the tonality of our words and the intention of them can be experienced in vibrational qualities.
In describing the communication of Angels (the higher evolutions of devas) Hodson writes:
“All the phenomena of emotion and thought which we term subjective are objective to angels as also to men endowed with superphysical vision. Angels thus see thought process, emotions and aspirations as external and material phenomena. For they live in the worlds of feeling, thought, spiritual intuition and spiritual will. Their ‘speech’ produces color and form rather than sound. A system of sym-bology is included in their mode of communication, symbols and flashes of color
K. Powers 13
always appearing in the superphysical worlds as natural expressions of both human and angelic thought.” [Hodson, pdf. P. 82]
I am continuing to have unusual life experiences that I recognize as the devic influence of training. This is not to imply that my experiences are the road map or specific instructions because everyone will have their own proclivity and external circumstances most suited for learning from Devas. Mostly I want to share how surprisingly common and yet individualized such experiences might be.
The pond as sonic amplifier
Only a couple of years ago, after the second trip to New Zealand, I moved to a new home in a small town. The townhomes form a single circle around a pond between hills rolling toward a river. Often I would go to stand on the northern upslope and look across the pond, past the ring of homes, to the other hillside in the distance where I could see a crest of pine trees and occasional bald eagle. It was only after I started practicing with the school, that I began to sense the location as a perfect amplifier for sound and knew why I was drawn to make my home there. Now when I go to that upslope overlooking the pond, it is for sounding mantrams and dancing and tai chi to celebrate with the Devas.
Working as a CSA farm hand
I was able to sign up for produce from a local Community Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) small farm just north of the town. They had a ‘u-pick’ feature and somehow I felt so connected to the land. So I jumped at the chance to volunteer on the farm for one morning a week during the growing season. It became the highlight of my week. In the early spring, we were in the greenhouse carefully placing individual seeds in trays. Then in summer came the weeks of weeding and finally the harvesting. There I would be pulling thistles and who knows what all kinds of weeds, or sorting garlic, or bagging potatoes. But I would find myself singing (to myself) the same songs I had practiced with the New Zealand group, especially the one about regenerating the soil. And the next week I would be back on the land again with my feet tingling and more little songs throbbing through my veins. Whatever was happening seemed reciprocal – the land nurturing me and me resonating to the land and crops.
Biking
Something about cycling through the countryside has been feeding my soul for close to twenty years now. The rhythmic movement, the vistas, and the coherence of my physical, emotional passion, and mental focus all bring me to a state where the resistance to soul dissipates and insight comes. I know now that this will be a prime source of my availability to the devas.
Silence and Breath
In mentioning this, I merely want to suggest that these two great modalities may have a livingness beyond being doorways to the meditation experience. It goes back to the comment by Danie’lou that parts of our being are already responding to sounds and frequencies that we do not actually hear in the physical sense. Sometimes when I am intentionally open to devic work, I simply feel a pressure in my ear

drums, not an actual sound. And sometimes when I am breathing, I am beginning to sense a power and impulse behind the breath, as the most obvious movement of all the electric currents enlivening forms. I am still pondering this new idea, linking the breath to the devas that constitute the form life of a human.
“It is the nature of the form to breathe, it is not the natures of the consciousness to breathe.” [Cedercrans, D&E p. 165 – 166]
Listening as a ‘Sounder’
It is my understanding now that the human sounder will be guided to hear on multiple planes. This is described in Rule VII in TWM [TWM p. 226] that identifies three different levels of astral sensitivity, the highest one being spiritual sensitivity. A more detailed listing is in LOM.
“There are many sounds to be heard on all the planes but on the physical is the greatest diversity. The aspirant has to develop the power to distinguish between:
1. The voices of earth………………………………physical,
2. The voices of desire…………………………….astral,
3. The speech or formulated thoughts of the
mind …………………………………………….mental,
4. The still small voice of the Christ within……buddhic,
5. The sounds of the Gods……The creative
words ………atmic,
6. The word or sound………..The AUM………monadic,
7. The breath …………………………………………logoic,
and in these distinctions are symbolically conveyed the problem of correct hearing on the various planes and in the various states of consciousness. Only the true mystic and aspirant will comprehend the nature of these distinctions.” [ LOS p. 337]
General Themes
Let me shift my pronoun now to the plural, because this is in fact group work, from the group soul. We can operate from the premise that the higher devas are now seeking a relationship with us as much as we are taking up our role in relationship to them. Here are some thoughts I try to keep in mind as I approach this work:
• Seek contact with Devas through love and longing – be available and sensitive • Deva’s communication seems paradoxically opposite of humans –
• They understand impulses, forces, and vibrations that are set up through ceremony and ritual (not speech as we know it)
• Approach this relationship with Great humility and respect for their necessary contribution and how little we understand the Devas
• Devas are not ‘summoned’, they attend ceremonies as they recognize the power in them

5. Incoming Seventh Ray and Cooperation with the Devas
In the past two years, many of us began experiencing a new imperative to live out the teachings in applications for the building of a new culture manifesting into an upgraded civilization. It is time to put theory into practice in our group work and go beyond the personal self-disciplines of the aspiring personality.
Scattered in the teachings by D.K. are comments on the incoming Seventh Ray and its role in humanity’s evolution. There is clear indication that this work involves the Devic Kingdom and mantrams of Sound.
“In these three words [transmutation, incarnation, transference] His [the Seventh Ray Lord] life work is summed up; in these three words is embodied the nature of this great Entity, Who presides over the processes of blending and merging and adaptation; Who, through His knowledge of cosmic Sound, guides the life forces of certain solar and lunar entities from form to form, and is the link between the soul awaiting incarnation, and its body of manifestation.” [TCF p. 445]
“The deva evolution will, through this seventh Ray force have much to do with the transmission of prana to units of the three higher kingdoms of nature, and this easier transmission (from the etheric levels of the physical plane) will parallel a correspondingly easier transmission of spiritual or psychical force from the fourth cosmic ether, the buddhic plane. The results of this pranic transmission will be more healthy physical bodies among the sons of men.” [TCF p. 473]
In my experience, transmutation plays a key role in facilitating the co-operative work of Devas and conscious Humans. This is explained further starting on p. 17 of this paper.
The White Magician works through Ray VII in conjunction with the Devic Kingdom
The introduction for A Treatise on White Magic [Bailey, A.A [TWM] states that three types of people will respond to the information and teachings – open minded investigators, aspirants and disciples, and initiates [TWM p. 6]. The latter “will know the truth of many of its statements and realize the subjective working out of many of the laws”- laws which demonstrate as effects in the dense form, demonstrate etherically as energy behind the effects and demonstrate mentally concerning the impulses behind the other two [TWM p.7]. I submit that working with the devas on the buddhic plane is enhanced by a careful study of TWM for the application of these laws. I do not think Ray VII equipment is a requirement for this work, but in my experience, it lends itself particularly well to the work with the Devic Kingdom who in turn are responsible for manifesting the intelligent substance evolved in the Aquarian age. This quotation regarding the mineral kingdom is one such example.
“But when the seventh ray comes in there is an intensification of that radiation, and new substances appear to come into new activity. This intensification leaves the entire mineral kingdom, as a whole, more radioactive than before, until this increased radiation becomes in its turn basic and fundamental.” [EP I pp.225, 226]
K. Powers 16
“In the magical work of form creation, we have carried the thought form down from the mental plane where the solar Angel initiated the work, through the astral, where the equilibrizing work was done, to the physical plane, or to the etheric levels. Here the work of producing objectivity is carried forward, and here the worker in magic is in critical danger of failure should he not be
cognizant of the forms and mantrams by which the new group of builders [devas?] can be reached, and the gap between the astral plane and the gaseous subplane of the physical be bridged. It might be useful here to remember that in the work of creation [Page 1022] the white magician avails himself of the current Ray influence. When the third, fifth and seventh rays are in power, either coming in, at full meridian, or passing out, the work is much easier than when the second, sixth or fourth are dominant. At the present time, the seventh Ray, as we know, is rapidly dominating, and it is one of the easiest of the forces with which man has to work. Under this Ray it will be possible to build a new structure for the rapidly decaying civilization, and to erect the new temple desired for the religious impulse.” [TCF pp. 1021-1022]
In TWM, the introduction presents four fundamental postulates [TWM pp. 8- 10]. The third postulate states the purpose of manifested being as the unfoldment of consciousness. This links the two great evolutions, the Devas as builders of manifest forms and the Human Kingdom with its evolution of consciousness.
“III. The third basic postulate is that the object for which life takes form and the purpose of manifested being is the unfoldment of consciousness, or the revelation of the soul. This might be called the Theory of the Evolution of Light. “[TWM p. 9].
The work of the White Magician is to wield those energies of the Spiritual with the force of his soul consciousness for the manifesting of Light within form. He does this under the Laws of White Magic and as he understands the greater objective, he is no longer a victim of laws which drive him forward toward an unseen end. [TWM p. 11]
In this training toward co-operating consciously with the Devas, we are seeking to aid the Devas in building a new earth and civilization. To the extent that this new earth involves a shift in energy level to one more aligned with Divine Purpose/plan, then the esoteric sounder is utilizing the technique of transmutation. The TCF speaks to this and provides five postulates for transmutation and White Magic. The five postulates will be referenced in the next section on Transmutation. I close here with some comments from TCF on the difference between White and Black Magic that point to important distinctions in the direction and source of force.
“The problem of speaking clearly on this subject of transmutation is a very real one, owing to the vastness of the subject and the fact that in the transmutation process the magician or alchemist works with deva essence through the control of the lesser Builders in co-operation with the greater Devas.
The student must [Page 488] recollect at this juncture the distinction that is made between the work of the black and the white magician.
First. The white Brother deals with positive electrical energy. The dark Brother deals with the negative electrical energy.
K. Powers 17
Second. The white Brother occupies himself with the soul of things. The black Magician centers his attention upon the form.
Third. The white Magician develops the inherent energy of the sphere concerned (whether human, animal, vegetable or mineral) and produces results through the self-induced activities of the central life,
[consciousness/soul] subhuman, human or super-human. The black Magician attains results through the agency of force external to the sphere involved, and produces transmutation through the agency of resolvents (if so I might term it) or through the method of the reduction of the form, rather than through radiation, as does the white Magician. [ TCF p 487-488]
Transmutation
In my experience, this word can be misapplied if limited only to a relatively straightforward technique for shifting the polarity of an emotion on the astral plane from negative to positive. There are at least two other magnitudes of transmutation work, shifting energy from one center to another and shifting from the personality to the spiritual, that relate more directly to the occult definition of transmutation.
“In defining transmutation as it is occultly understood, we might express it thus: Transmutation is the passage across from one state of being to another through the agency of fire.” [TCF p. 476]
“2. Gradually, the qualities of the personality energy are transmuted into those of the ego or soul and the fusion of the two energies—soul and body—is then complete. [Page 381] This Technique of Fusion might be better understood by all of you if it were called the Technique of Transmutation, but it must be remembered that the transmutation referred to is not that of bad qualities into good or of bad characteristics into good ones (for this should take place quite definitely upon the Path of Probation) but the transmutation of the higher aspects of the personality ray into those of the soul. When this has been to a great extent carried forward satisfactorily, then the Technique of Duality comes into play—a duality differing greatly from that to which we refer when we speak of higher and lower selves.” [EPII p. 381]
In Esoteric Healing [Bailey, [EH] the term is used in reference to shifting energy upward from one center to another and transformation is used when the energy flows downward.
“Students should remember that there is both an upward and a downward trend of energy within the entire structure of centers, where the aspirant and the disciple are concerned: 1. The upward trend…producing Transmutation.
From the sacral center to the throat center. Physical creation is transmuted into artistic creativity. . . . .
From any or all of the five spinal centers to the ajna center. Uncoordinated living is transmuted into personality integration.
From the six centers in relationship into the highest head center. Personality activity is transmuted into spiritual living.”
2. The downward trend…producing Transformation.
K. Powers 18
Once the head center is awakening and the disciple is consciously active in the work of directing the energies to the centers and thereby governing his personality life, there is a scientific undertaking of energizing the centers in a certain ordered rhythm which is again determined by the rays, by circumstance and by karma; thus all the bodily energies are swung into correct spiritual activity. . . .[EH p 214- 216]
TCF describes transmutation in terms of its alchemical process with the emphasis on fire. The Five Postulates provide an overview of the process and the connection to the devas.
“To return to our statement of our five postulates anent the transmutation of substance, the resolution of the life, or the transference of energy into different forms.
THE FIVE POSTULATES
Postulate I. All matter is living matter, or is the vital substance of deva entities. For instance, a plane, and forms built of that particular plane substance, is the material form or sheath of a great deva, who is the essence back of manifestation and the soul of the plane. [Page 489]
Postulate II. All forms, vibrating to any keynote, are fabricated by the building devas out of the matter of their own bodies. Hence they [the building Devas] are called the great Mother aspect, for they produce the form out of their own substance.
Postulate III. The devas are the life which produces form-cohesion. They are the third and second aspects blended, and might be considered as the life of all forms that are subhuman. A magician, therefore, who transmutes in the mineral kingdom works practically with deva essence in its earliest form on the upward arc of evolution, and has to remember three things: . . .
Postulate IV. All deva essences and builders on the physical plane are peculiarly dangerous to man, for they work on the etheric levels and are—as I have earlier pointed out—the transmitters of prana, or the vital, animating substance, and hence they set loose upon the ignorant and the unwary, fiery essence which burns and destroys.
Postulate V. The devas do not work as individualized conscious units through self-initiating purposes as does a man, a Heavenly Man or a solar Logos (viewed as Egos) but they work in groups subject to:
a. Inherent impulse, or latent active intelligence.
b. Orders issued by the greater Builders.
c. Ritual, or compulsion induced through color and sound. [Page 490]
When these facts are remembered and considered, some comprehension of the place the devas play in transmutation may be achieved. “[TCF 488 - 491]
6. Group Progress and the NGWS
K. Powers 19
I make the following bold statement based on some references from TCF and quoted below. The Aquarian Age will see the development of Human intercommunication with the Devic Kingdom
In order to fully see the opportunity and destiny in this intercommunication, it is necessary to appreciate both the Devic and Human evolutions in their correspondence to the highest planes of the cosmos and the bodies of the Heavenly Man. First it should be emphasized that the human kingdom evolves in self consciousness while the devic kingdom constructs forms following the laws and intents of vibration.
“The third type of force, that of Will, the balancing equilibrium of electrical phenomena, has to play equally upon and through both evolutions, but in the one it demonstrates as self consciousness, and in the other as constructive vibration.” [TCF p. 667]
“The perfection of the two evolutions [devic and human] marks the point of attainment of the divine Heavenly Man; it is the perfecting of the two major centers, creative activity and love, of the Logos. In their lower aspect these centers are known as the centers of generation and the solar plexus, but are transmuted, as evolution proceeds, into the throat and heart centers.” [TCF p. 590]
While the necessity for the two kingdoms to meet in perfection is clear, it is also written that the actual approach must not occur on the concrete material level but on higher planes such as the Buddhic and Cosmic Etheric. Thus the necessity to approach this work only in group formation after appropriate alignment and invocation of protection.
“Approach between the two lines of evolution becomes possible on the plane of buddhi, but then it is an approach of two essences, and not an approach of the concrete to the essence. I have dwelt on this point, for the danger is real, and near at hand.” [TCF p.473]
For me the most striking statement from my readings in terms of shifting awareness has been the statement in TCF that “Man is a Deva Esoterically” [TCF p.729]. This was further explained in the Cedercrans book study group The Disciple and Economy [Cedercrans, D&E], when we reflected on the nature of intelligent substance in our mental, astral, and physical bodies and that this substance and activity was by nature devic. Our body vehicle took its form based on the consciousness indwelling, but the natural perfection of that form and our three vehicles has been impacted by the distortions of humanity over the ages.
“From the most esoteric standpoint “Man is a deva;” he is Spirit and deva substance, united through the work of conscious deva energy.” [TCF p.729]
The Role for Human Consciousness in Devic Building – providing Will and Intention Most of my thoughts in this direction have been the result of the Cedercrans book study on The Disciple and Economy and personal communication with Jonathan Eveleigh [Eveleigh] who is the instructor.
K. Powers 20
Jonathan Eveleigh sent a pdf compilation “The Devic Partnership – Re-Purposing Economy” based on his study and from works by Lucile Cedercrans and Glen Knape that further emphasizes the unique role of humanity in working with the Devas. It addresses the role of esoteric practitioners to bring to the Devas a purpose that is connected to our alignment with Divine Will. As I understand it, in the past humanity has unconsciously influenced the Devas with our sense of separateness and distortion, our ‘separated will’. It behooves us now, as forerunners to re-establish alignment with the divine plan/purpose and only from that aligned Will to again approach the devas.
“Motivating Will is not a characteristic of Substance (mental, astral, physical). Yet substance cannot act, cannot move into creative activity, without a motivating focus of will. Thus, it falls to the Second Aspect or Soul (which, being born of the relationship between Spirit and Substance has the ability to relate) to relate or convey a focused intent to Substance. The intelligent lives of Substance, the devas, then respond to that motivating, directing Will with intelligent activity.”. . . . .
“Motivating and directing Will energy is related and conveyed to them by Soul. As the Soul, that is part of our function, and the opposition created by the devic response to the separated will that we have impressed on them is one of the consequences of our separated consciousness. It is our responsibility, and it is up to us to release the devas from the trap of opposition in which we have placed them.” Compilation Jonathan Eveleigh p.3
“Thus, when we communicate with devas and devic substance we must be extremely careful to: wait until our purpose is absolutely clear, formulate that purpose into a seed-statement that has the same meaning to the devas as it does to us, and sound that purpose to and impress it on the
devas as an ordered system of Laws which will motivate, guide, and direct their actions.” – [Eveleigh reference 4- Group Creative Process, Glen Knape, p.51-57]
The passage from Rays and Initiations also links the higher devas to Divine Will.
“The devas are the agents of the divine will because they are a consequence of the point of attainment of our planetary Logos as He exists outside the seven planes of our sphere of existence, the cosmic physical plane. They are conditioned by His cosmic astral and mental vehicles. In a definite sense, they are the agents of the Universal Mind, even though they are not mental as we understand that term. They are sometimes regarded as blind forces, but that is only because they get their inspiration from levels of [Page 180] divine awareness outside the range of the human consciousness, no matter how high, or when used in its widest connotation.” [RI p179-180]
Jonathan also wrote me directly in multiple emails with these wisdom pearls:
• “Consider that the Devas are responsible for intelligent activity in partnership with the Souls who are responsible for formulating that activity and that the incarnated soul-in form is the word (the sound) made flesh.
K. Powers 21
• All is according to Law and humanity is learning to obey divine law by applying it. • As disciples we are learning that the creative work is at the Triadic level.
• It is there that the soul “formulates a ‘law’ (the word) to connect the devas to purpose” by sounding it in the ashram.
• And as ever the partnership between the human soul and the Devas of the Nature Kingdom evolves through Love.”
Protection in Group Work
The suggestion about aligning with Divine intention in our role for working with Devas, seems to indicate both peril and promise. I do not think we can shirk from our responsibility, which is why I am writing this paper. Yet it seems paramount that in undertaking this work, if it is to access ‘Purpose’ at all, it can only do so through a group of practicing disciples.
In my experience, working in a group, in full acknowledgement of the group, offers a modicum of protection. In such a group, the individual will is subjected to the good of the group. Efforts put forth toward the devas are a synthesis of all the experiences and contributions of those who are able to identify with the group soul. There is the potential for greater balance in this diversity.
Peril linked to ‘Resistance’
It was Jonathan who asked me to consider the connection between peril when approaching devas and patterns of resistance with regards to transmutation work. The significance of this became obvious. The peril comes from using intention to apply energy to builders that are already on a path of distortion. In the transmutation work, which I addressed in more detail above, the group looks at the patterns of resistance and old thought-forms, even addressing those which might be unconscious. And then the group offers to these patterns of resistance/distortion, an alignment to love and healing of Christ energy. The basic technique described by Cedercrans [ Cedercrans, NOS p. 108] uses the light of the soul to transmute that which is negative in the instrument (body, emotions, mental). In this way we are aiding the process of redemption of matter encouraging the light within to realign with Divine Intent.
Standing in the midway point to work with the Devas in their serried ranks
There is I believe one way to work safely with the devas on the material plane. First we need to remember how ‘unconscious’ these builders are. In the esoteric texts, as described above, they are referred to as the voice of the army and the serried ranks.
The phrase that has been helpful to me is to ‘stand in the midway point’. This was described by Jonathan Eveleigh in our discussions for the book study The Disciple and Economy [Cedercrans] when we talked about the role of consciousness for aligning intelligent activity with divine purpose. This is done however in the direction of manifestation (not supplication or aspiration), receiving the Divine impulse and directing it through group consciousness in the midway point toward intelligent substance.
K. Powers 22
” This is the ability to align Purpose with activity and to indwell the space between as consciousness.” . . . “Once you can master this technique, you have mastered embodiment” [Cedercrans, D&E p. 70-71]
As I paraphrase this discussion, the soul from its own plane and aligned with the One life, directs the impulse of protype/purpose into the substantial manifest world as appearances of activity. For me, the midway point is the place of group soul consciousness which is essentially consciousness of being and of actually ‘being relationship’ as a position of identity. In this esoteric sense, the key to relationship is alignment, a function of consciousness that serves to bring two aspects into greater alignment through the function of consciousness. I now experience this as a midway point of group consciousness holding an alignment of relationship between the Divine Will aspect purpose/plan and the third aspect of intelligent substance expressing in the manifest worlds.
In TWM Rule VIII there is also descriptions of a need to stand in “the midway spot” [TWM p.231] and even though the emphasis may be on mastery of the astral body, still there are similarities in terms of soul control moving out into the manifest world. At a certain point in soul development, there is the ability to choose whether to withdraw to the center or to direct energy and force into the world of manifestation.
“Within the aspirant there arises an understanding of what is going on and he awakens to the desire to control consciously this ebb and flow or (to put it in simple words) to turn the forces of the outgoing energy in any direction he chooses, or to withdraw to his center at will. He seeks to arrest this process of being swept out into incarnation without having any conscious purpose, and refuses to see the tide of his life beat out on emotional or mental spheres of existence, and then again see that life withdrawn without his conscious volition. He stands at the midway point and wants to control his own cycles, the “ebb and flow” as he himself may determine it.” [TWM p244]
The TWM Rule VIII text goes on to define the midway spot for the advanced disciple, where they stand as intermediary between Spirit and matter.
“For the disciple it is the mental plane where form and soul make contact and the great transition becomes possible. For the advanced disciple and the initiate, the midway spot is the causal body, the karana sarira, the spiritual body of the soul, standing as the intermediary between Spirit and matter, Life and form, the monad and the personality.” [TWM p. 247]
As stated in the introduction to TWM, the student in contact with his higher self becomes aware of the object of the spiritual laws and can begin to wield energy to transfer divine impulse toward that objective in the manifest world. We begin to consciously wield the forces according to the prototypic vision of the growth in consciousness that can be made through the appearances and manifestations of the material worlds.
“He learns that that impulse demonstrates an intelligent purpose, wisely directed, and based on love. He then himself begins to wield the law or to pass wisely, lovingly and intelligently through
K. Powers 23
himself as much of that spiritual life impulse which his particular organism can respond to, transmit and utilize. He ceases to obstruct and begins to transfer. He brings to an end the cycle of the closed self-centered life, and opens the doors wide to spiritual energy.” [TWM p.11]
Synthesis and the Work Ahead
This section and my understanding evolved while I was working on the paper. I was inspired and somewhat relieved by the conclusions of Brown and Nash in their article when they made another powerful statement as to the future work between the humanity and devas.
“As correct relationship increases, members of the human family will evolve into conscious co creators or potent receiving and transmitting centers for these subtle life forces. In this way humanity can fulfill its pre-ordained purpose to “act as the Divine Messenger to the world of form.” [quoting AAB, EA p. 200] Not only will we develop greater respect for the earth and understand the urgency of protecting the environment from chemical or biological contamination. We may be able to think and will the devas into constructive action—to produce new sources of food, protect and heal the earth, and create a profusion of new forms of the highest expression.” [Brown and Nash, p. 63]
7. Summary and Conclusion
In this paper I have reviewed briefly the esoteric understanding of the devic kingdom and talked specifically about my personal experience with the human voice for sounding in group formation with a group from New Zealand for planetary healing with the devas. The last sections seek to place this background into the context of the work ahead for the NGWS and specifically for the forerunners to the Aquarian Age. These final sections have been a synthesis of my insights from researching for this paper, personal reflections, and the discussions and meditations in my group work.
In moving forward in these final years before the 2025 conclave, I would like to suggest that we continue to enlist collaboration with the devic kingdom as part of our group meditations. We must do so with respect and a basic knowledge of the way our energy and force (through consciousness) can impact the Devas who in turn work in intelligent substance.
If we call to invite the Devas, we must do so from our strongest alignment to Divine Will through group effort at a Triadal level. What we are offering is the consciousness of relationship, the second aspect. Consciousness of relationship on multiple levels and in multiple directions, always standing in group formation at some central or midway point. The quality may be love, but the ability to direct energy involves accessing Will. I will close with this quotation from DK.
“Humanity itself must apply the necessary correctives, believing it can do so in the strength of its own sensed wisdom and strength; yet all the time, behind the scenes, stand the grouped
K. Powers 24
world aspirants, working silently, in unison with each other and the Hierarchy, and thus keeping the channel open through which the needed wisdom, strength and love can flow.” [EP II p. 114]
