Introduction
The focus of this paper is consciousness, energy, humanity and thought. A Treatise on Cosmic Fire (TCF) and Treatise on White Magic (TWM) of Alice Bailey will be the sources. Alice Bailey dedicated The Treatise on Cosmic Fire to Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, “that great disciple who lighted her torch In the East and brought the light to Europe and America in 1875.”1) The light from her torch continues with the teachings from the Tibetan used in this paper.
TCF offers a new understanding of psychology and the relation existing between Spirit and Matter demonstrating as consciousness. TCF’s scope is universal as it deals with the solar system and briefly touches on human aspects as they are the part to the whole and of the unit to totality. TCF will be our primary source.
TWM deals with human development and unfoldment, the laws of spiritual psychology, the nature of the soul of man and energy’s safe use in humanity’s spiritual development. To remain true to the Tibetan’s teachings, his words in TCF and TWM will remain intact with small adjustments made by the author for the basic nature of this paper.
I. Humanity and the Energy of Thought
Human thoughts and thought forms along with their creation and effects will be briefly addressed within the framework of the Fire of mind and its ruler, Agni. We assume that the reader has knowledge of the Constitution of Man and its components. Advancing humans must have knowledge of the Constitution and its parts as they move to higher planes of consciousness.
The mind of humans is the instrument used in a magical process of energy interacting with the physical, emotional and mental planes of humanity. When integrated, these planes are ready to receive soul energies. Humanity is in transition from a focus on the physical and emotional planes to the mental age commanded by the realms of thought. Thoughts are the product of the mind with its three aspects: a) Higher mind; b) Soul; and the c) Lower mind of personality. Human evolution is involved because human development and unfoldment move along phases of discipleship as each human learns to live the truth in daily life. This evolution is concerned with energy and matter and their relationships as the soul unfolds in form and gains needed experience. White magic and the white magician are involved.
Humanity is moving into a new era where the mind and the power of thought will be primary factors in human evolution. Humans will begin to recognize their positions as creators and the accompanying results which will enable them to come into their divine right in which creation will result from thought impulses and not desire impulses. Intellectual considerations will replace human desire and emotion.
The power of thought emanating from higher planes of consciousness including the Ego will guide man. When there is an idea, it is clothed in matter as in matter of the mental plane of the same type of vibration as the idea. Then the idea may be vitalized with other matter, i.e. astral, before it can appear in dense physical form. When the thought’s life reaches a conclusion, it is destroyed by its Creator. TCF556
An embodied idea, therefore, is literally a positive impulse, emanating from mental levels and clothing itself in a veil of substance. These positive emanations are from a greater force centre which is expressing through them both. “This creative impulse, this tendency towards the concretion of the abstract, this inherent ability to ‘take form’ has its fullest expression as yet in physical matter. The ‘raison d’etre’ is that – for man – all substances with which he creates, all forms which he builds, and all processes of concretion, which he carries on, are created, built and carried on within the physical body of the Logos.”2) TCF556
Fire, Energy and Thought
There are basic facts that humans must know as they move along the consciousness continuum. One such thought is that humans are energy and energy is used in the creation of thought. Humanity is a creator in mental matter which is a part of fire, i.e. Agni. Fire, solar fire in particular, is the essence of thought, the life of forms and consciousness in its evolution.
Agni, the Ruler of Fire
Agni is the vitality that energizes and the Life that animates, the Fire that drives, propels and produces the activity and organization of all forms. Agni, the Lord of Fire, the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer, manifests through forty-nine fires and is the sum total of the Gods. The fire of mind is consciousness. The Secret Doctrine of HP Blavatsky tells us we are dealing with the life and the lives. “All is Life, and every atom of even mineral dust is a Life, though beyond our comprehension and perception. … Life therefore is everywhere in the Universe.”3)
Agni manifesting as the seven planes applied to the Human Constitution is present in bodies on all seven planes and is a comprehensive presence in each human. Agni is reflected downward from the soul of the Solar Logos and is the life spark of God. Humans will understand this in more detail when they function consciously on the higher planes as third degree initiates. TCF 604 Agni rules over three planes of human evolution (physical, astral and mental). As Agni (fire or life) and substance (form) are blended, humanity’s evolutionary goals are aided.
One primary goal of humans is to bridge the gap between the lower mental plane and the upper mental plane, the home of the soul. Humans are currently focused on the emotional plane while attempting to elevate their consciousness to the mental plane and bridge the gap. Devas, an important part of consciousness evolution and thought forms, are introduced in the next section.
The Devas
Devas are involved in many planes of consciousness and in the thought form process. The Monad reflects its will and desire to the soul on the high subplanes of the mental plane. Then the soul takes over, calling in the devas who work through the lower subplanes, assisted by lesser devas. Humans work with devas in various thought form stages. Here is a brief overview of some deva types.
1. Fire Devas .. the Greater Builders. Fire devas are both substance and the energy of substance. There are types that function on various subplanes and build physical manifestation thereon. Devas assigned to the physical subplanes are Agnichaitans (“fire builders”).
2. Agnisuryans are astral plane devas and, due to humanity being focused primarily on the astral plane, are predominately controlled by these devas.
3. The Solar Angels, the Agnishvattas. Agnishvattas are Solar Angels and fire devas of the mental plane. These fire devas are of high spirituality and have seven classes:
- Three highest govern the first three subplanes of the mental plane;
- Four lower classes work with the four lower subplanes;
- The midpoint, third subplane, are Egos or Souls because they build the egoic/causal body on the higher mental levels. Their responsibility is to unite the higher triadic planes of atma, buddhi, manas with the three lower personality planes of the physical, emotional and four lower mental subplanes.
The mental plane devas, Agnishvattas, solar Angels, have the most occult significance for humans, for these solar Angels concern their essential nature. The Tibetan indicates that this topic is of the greatest importance and should be one of the most widely studied sections of Treatise on Cosmic Fire.
It is a wondrous thing to read about and imagine the work of the solar Angels forming permanent atoms, lotus petals, and personality vehicles. The solar Angels construct the petals out of their own substance. They impress the Ego through the mental unit to embody as much logoic will and purpose as could be accomplished within a single lifetime and the causal body is ready for its life journey. Their positive force produces initiation after initiation as the lotus expands and individualization occurs.
Agni, the Lord of Fire, rules over all the devas on the three planes of human evolution, the physical, the astral, and the mental. Devas are energies assigned to these planes. As humanity evolves to higher dimensions of consciousness, it is the responsibility of humanity to learn how to work with devas and energies of the planes, particularly the mental plane. In the next section a brief introduction to mental plane energies and applicable laws will be provided.
II. Thoughts, Functions and Laws
“A thought form, as constructed by man, is the union of a positive emanation and a negative. These two are the emanations of a Unity, the coherent Thinker.”4) The thought form is created by humans to carry out a specific task for which it has been programmed. Humans may or may not be aware of its creation and effect. It is the result of two types of energy: a) from the Ego and b) from the man on the physical plane through the medium of the brain. POT411.
Function of Thought Forms
Every thought form functions in a manner as described in the following three sections from Treatise on Cosmic Fire: TCF 551
- to respond to vibration on two levels:
- from the dense physical body of man. Humans are creators and we have created our dense physical body for this lifetime. Many years are needed for us to control this thought form of our body.
- from the Solar Logos and its thought form, this solar system.
Humans are creators in their physical, astral and mental bodies. Control of each of these bodies changes as humans expand their consciousness and understand the larger picture of the universe and the energy within which they function. Just as the Solar Logos creates in its world, we are creators in our three worlds.
2) to provide a body for an idea. Preparing the form is the whole purpose of existence and subsequent incarnation. An embodied idea, therefore, is literally a positive impulse, emanating from mental levels and clothing itself in a veil of negative substance. There are two emanations from a still greater force centre which is expressing purpose through them both.
3) to perform/carry out a specific purpose. Three factors are involved in this function: identity, time and karma. TCF 560
- Identity involves goal, who is willing the purpose, what is its source, mission and objective. All thought forms, whether logoic, planetary, or human, have a goal that is reached only by working under a set of rules or laws.
- Time involves birth//construction of the thought form, its life span and its dissolution or death. Cosmic thought forms have a spiritual life. Solar thoughtforms have a manasic life. Human thought forms have an elemental life. Human thought forms, through color, sound, and vibration all reveal their inner life goal and purpose.
- Karmic factor is determined by the effects produced by the thought form
Laws of Thought
There are multiple laws that apply to thoughts and the worlds they function in. The reader is encouraged to become familiar with them through the Treatises on Cosmic Fire and White Magic. A broad view of Laws of Thought categories are as follows:
- Three cosmic laws in which our cosmos operates.
- Seven systemic laws which enable us to comprehend mental energy and its use in organizing thought forms. Each plane and subplane are governed by their Rays or Subrays.
- Karmic Law and the Laws and the Planes. TCF 567
III Man as a Creator in Mental Matter
In this section we will look at thought form creation, responsibilities of man, occult work, as well as building in the three worlds. In Section IV of this paper, additional information on The construction, vitalisation and actuating of the thought form will be covered. Keep in mind that the Soul gives characteristics and different forms, plays upon matter and matter responds to its vibrations by building forms. TWM 33-36
Thought Form Creation
There are grades of thought and humans produce thoughts of various types depending upon their developmental level (physical, astral, mental). The primary focus for the majority of humanity is on the physical and emotional planes. Advancing humans are moving to mental and higher planes. Thoughts are the product of the mind with its three aspects: higher mind, soul and lower mind of personality. The grade of thought produces results, or effects, from positive/productive to negative/destructive. TCF 947-951
The intelligent individual working from mental levels becomes a creator through the manipulation of the powers of thought. Creation can be positive/commendable or negative/ harmful. As humanity evolves with the mental unfoldment of the human race, it is critical that occult students know and teach about energy, in and through each human and as a part of the larger universe.
Their students as well as themselves will grow in sensitivity, awareness, knowledge and understanding of the responsibility they share in creating a better world. Their consciousness will grow and their destiny as part of the Plan will emerge. The Universal Laws will be guides for the future. As their past is reflected upon, the effects on their energies and the energies they have built, a commitment will arise to reduce and eliminate harmful results now and in the future.
Information in this subject matter is general because there are dangers involved. Man affects lesser lives when dealing with electrical energies and those thoughts emanating from him. TCF 947 When mental matter comes from lower levels it is generally unhealthy and unsupportive of spiritual living.
When humans have an idea, it is clothed in matter, as in matter of the mental plane, of the same type of vibration as the idea. Then the idea may be vitalized with other matter, i.e. astral, before it can appear in dense physical form. The mind organism should be kept under close control to be guided into positive channels during this process. Thought forms are important to discussion of the mental plane because each thought gives rise to its corresponding entity on that plane.
Clear and long maintained thought generates a clear and well-defined form. Such thought-forms might be described as radiant and brilliantly colored in appearance. Thought-forms generated by dull or badly trained minds are vague in outline and transient, are scattered and ineffective energies often surrounding their creator with a dense cloud of half-formed disintegrating thought forms and clouds of energy in the process of dissolution. This might be like decay of a physical form which is unpleasant and unwholesome.
The Ego imposes a new rhythm upon its shadow, humanity on the lower planes, bringing energy to, or defecting energy away, from man’s creation. Higher frequencies of the soul emerge as humanity learns how to be conscious co-creators. More evolved human souls aid in comprehending the shift of energies from personality to soul and to appreciate the devas and how they work.
Wrong Manipulation of Matter and the Dweller on the Threshold
It has been said that distresses in world can be directly traced to man’s wrong manipulation of mental matter and ignorance about nature of matter itself. In man’s attempt to achieve balance between pairs of opposites, distortions of astral light produced glamour and intensified maya creating “The Dweller on the Threshold.” In past root races and in the current root race, impediments on the Path of Return have been created and must be overcome.
The Dweller is lower level energy and a vitalized form which humans construct and nourish during the course of previous incarnations. It represents the sum total of his/her evil desires, motives and thoughts. The astral nature of humanity feeds the Dweller. The Tibetan tells us that the Dweller affects each of us and those that we come in contact with. Present mental matter is manipulated and directed into lower level forms.
The desire bodies (the most powerful) of man establish a strong energy that elicits a response from the lunar entities who feed the “Dweller”. An immense thought form casts a shadow over the human family and must be broken and dissipated by humanity itself. It was built by humans everywhere during the ages, energized by insane desires and evil inclinations of all that is worst in humanity’s nature and kept alive by them.
This immense thought form produced by humanity’s ignorance remains alive in three ways:
- Selfish desires, wicked intentions and evil desires of man.
- Those (brothers of the shadow) who vitalize the thought form can also destroy it. Wrong thinking in speech and action continue building the thought form.
- Energy of a certain force from an earlier solar system. TCF 949
Humans feed the Dweller through their astral focus which is the primary focus of most humans.
One of the primary works of the Ego is to impose new rhythm upon his shadow and reflection, lower man, and bring energy into alignment with the solar Angel. The Ego can impose a new energy on its shadow, lower man, and this new vibration reflects energy away from man’s unbalanced creation. Eventually, a new vibration is brought in that is in tune with his Solar Angel. TCF 950-1
Destruction of the Dweller
The Dweller is a great impediment for humans on the Path and must be destroyed for the health and evolution of humans. The work of humanity is to break loose from the influence of the Dweller. Humans must destroy what they have constructed and shake themselves free from the illusion cast “by the persistent vampire which they have nourished and strengthened for mellenia of years.” TCF 950 The Law of Karma says the creator of the form must destroy it.
As humanity evolves, and as each human reaches the Probationary Path, s/he can direct energies away from the Dweller. To overpower the Dweller humans must use higher frequencies of the soul and be conscious co-creators with it. The Dweller’s destruction involves the power of the solar Angel, the force of Ego, a thorough study of law, knowledge of the power of sound, and the control of speech. The Dweller dies when the strength of the impulse emanating from lower levels dies out. TCF952-3
Role of The Great Ones
Humanity is not alone in the work of destroying the Dweller and evolving into higher dimensions of consciousness. The Great Ones, the Masters, aid humanity in destroying what it has created and shake itself free from illusion by:
- The strength of their united thoughts
- The Hierarchical work of training and teaching individuals to be conscious centres of force in destruction
- The use of certain mantras and words that bring in interplanetary forces
- Stimulating man’s egoic bodies so that the Solar Angels may precisely and forcefully work with the lunar gods as well as blaze forth their glory to fuel flames that destroy the Dweller. TCF 950
A primary work of the Ego is to replace old rhythms of its shadow and reflection, the lower man, with new rhythms that will deflect energy away from its distorted creation and bring a vibration that is in tune with its solar Angel.
As the solar Gods, or Fallen Angels5), descend closer to the physical plane and assume more control of the lunar natures, men’s thoughts and desires are purified. The solar fires extinguish the lunar light and lower natures are purified and transmuted.
In time the Solar Angels blaze forth in all their glory
through the medium of the lower nature on the physical plane,
that lower nature providing fuel to the flames.
The hated “Dweller on the Threshold” thus gradually dies
for lack of sustenance and disintegrates
for lack of vitality and man is set free.6)
Responsibilities of Man
Man’s place in the cosmic plan is vitally important and one of his main responsibilities is the direction of energy currents from the mental plane and creation on higher levels. Man’s evolution in order to be a conscious creator in matter involves:
- Comprehension of the archetypal plan,
- Understand the laws of creation and the building processes of nature,
- Cooperate with planetary purpose,
- Realization of the nature of energy, direct its currents and disintegrate forms, to be able to shift energies from personality to soul,
- Appreciate the devas, their constitution and how they work with sounds and words. TCF952+
When Egoic levels are directing humanity, when desire is transmuted, and the 5th principle awakened and illuminating the 6th, lower level impulses die out and the Dweller on the Threshold will die. Stated another way, when the dense physical body of the planetary Logos is completely purified and vitalized by the forces of etheric life and when all His centres are fully awakened, then will those centres be channels for pure force and such an entity as the Dweller is impossible. Every aspirant has created form representing evil desires, motives and thoughts that are vampires. In addition, others that he has come in contact with have been affected. To destroy these energies and disintegrate them, he must
- use methods similar to the Great Ones,
- use the increasing power of his Solar Angel,
- use the force of his Ego,
- through the study of law,
- through the knowledge of power of sound and
- speech control and other factors. TCF 953
“The Solar Angel must put out the light of the lunar angels
and then for lack of warmth and light, that
which has served to hinder no longer is.”7)
Group Work
While the evolutionary goal of humanity is to work in mental matter, few humans deliberately and consciously do so. Joining a group offers an alternative. It is very important because the group soul can slowly draw the lower thought forms into itself. Groups can contribute to creating new forms of thinking within the group context. By jointly focusing thoughts on a specific issue, inspiration may arise, as well as a diversity of minds offers wider viewpoints on one idea.
A meditative attitude of many people aids in finding solutions to humanity’s problems. New forms of thought can emerge that offer ways to transcend outdated methods. The reader is encouraged to learn more about this process in depth in the Treatises on Cosmic Fire and White Magic as well as Lucis Trust efforts particularly in Problems of Humanity.
Occult Work, the Personality and the Planes
In all occult work, for mental matter to manifest upon physical plane and thus achieve objectivity, man has to work as a unit with the lower three planes subordinated to Ego so that the Ego may impose upon physical brain. When this occurs, the material from the Ego can be received by the physical brain.
Coordination is required between the soul and the personality and its ego-brain. If the soul has not been involved in ascertaining purpose and motive then the result may be selfishly evil. The soul must conceive the idea before the personality and its brain are permitted to do the work. TCF 958
Man must do several things:
Purify lower/astral desires. When man has clear vision in the occult sense, he is able to read the akashic records and incoming and departing thought impulses. He loses himself within the group’s interest and cooperates with the plan. Faculty enable him to be aware of the keynote of the race and be aware of the ‘cry of humanity.’
Secure control over the mind which involves a) the nature of mind and brain b) the relation that should exist between the physical brain and Man c) an ability to meditate occultly to know his share of the plan and cooperate in that work with others. These mental controls enable man to know the laws of energy. Then man discovers how to build a thought form of specific quality and tone which becomes a means for the manifestation of an idea.
Having constructed a thought form, learn how to send it on its mission. Often man is a victim of his own thoughts and his thought forms are neither strong enough nor wise enough to dissipate them. Because of this, the human race is surrounded by a thick fog of negative energy. TCF 955-956
2. Thought Form Building in the Three Worlds
For thought form building to be more effective humanity must achieve an ever greater degree of alignment of the soul with the physical brain via the life thread of the sutratma. Energy is involved as well as the energy body of man. When alignment is augmented by use of the consciousness thread, or antahkarana, then the will of the soul is easily impressed upon the brain and such an advanced person becomes a powerful tool for Hierarchical use. Disciples approaching initiation are open to increasing amounts of energy from the Triad which enable them not only to receive high levels of soul direction as well as vitalizing and energizing such ideas into physical manifestation.
Experience in advanced meditation practices produces the alignment necessary to receive soul impressions. The expanding consciousness provided by building the antahkarana enables the physical appearances of thought forms. As evolution proceeds, the three fires of spirit, soul and body unite to produce an effective conscious worker in mental matter. As humanity treads the Path, its ability to create in mental matter grows.
At some point in evolution, physical plane humanity will create, by conscious will, energies on the mental plane that will produce specific effects on the physical plane. When certain conditions are met, man becomes a conscious creator in mental matter. These creations can be productive energies that contribute to humanity’s evolution and world goodwill. TCF 962-3
IV Man and the Fire Spirits or Builders
In this section the subjects explored are the Will aspect and creation and the Nature of Magic.
- Will aspect and creation
In evolved disciples the Will aspect comes from the soul; in lesser developed beings the will comes from the personality and is generally self-centered.
Condition of the Magician
As man develops along the Path and moves through various stages, his energies also change and are reflected in his Constitution. As the centres are activated and the physical head centres awakened, the lowest egoic influence is found. On the Probationary Path and up to the 3rd Initiation, man spreads illumination which irradiates the physical life. At the time of the 3rd Initiation, the life of the Personality is under the will of the Ego. TCF 964-5
The disciple’s service to humanity is largely dependent upon three things
- The stage of his bodies and their egoic alignment
- The condition of activity present in the physical brain centre
- The circulatory action of the triangular transmission of force.
The above factors are dependent upon others as follows:
- Ability of the disciple to meditate
- Ability to interpreting plans and purposes of his Ego
- Power to hold a meditative state while building the form for his idea
- Amount of energy he give pour into the thought form and procure its life.
- Purity of motives TCF 963-7
Certain types of meditation produce the alignment necessary to receive soul impressions. The antahkarana expands consciousness enabling the physical appearances of thought forms. The energy body of humans change particularly with the opening of head centres and the three fires of spirit soul and body combining to produce an effective conscious worker in mental matter.
In early stages of the discipleship path and final stages of probationary path, humans become aware of powers that are not under their control. They must continue purifying their vehicles and eliminating distortions. The true disciple’s aim is to include the higher and not consider the lower and astral facilities. As progress unfolds, the aspirant will begin to recognize several changes as described in A Treatise on White Magic, pages 168 and thereafter.
There are many other factors involved at this stage as the aspirant develops and acquires new energies. TWM 165-6. The Masters guide and train humanity in the use of mental energy. Purity of the vehicle increases the likelihood of humanity’s receipt of ideas and revelation of plans.
Speech and the spoken word influence man’s energy body in several ways. The lower four etheric centers, the head, heart and throat centers begin to activate their respective glands. Stimulation from the head center allows the pineal gland to awaken; energy from the heart center arouses the pituitary gland, while energy from the throat center causes the alta major to vibrate. This great internal triangle of powerful energies is galvanized into full circulation resulting ultimately in the soul infusion of the whole personality as the third initiation is taken. A White Magician is born!
The white magician knows that when the proper and correct ray stimulation is applied to the soul then the soul, thus stimulated, will do its own work of destruction, of attraction, of rebuilding and of a consequent renewed life manifestation. This is true of the soul of man, of the soul of a nation and of the soul of humanity itself.
From the pineal gland, Ray 1 energy produces an idea. From the pituitary gland Ray 2 energies stimulate the form-making abilities. From the alta major centre Ray 3 vibrations arouse the physical manifestation of the original idea.
The construction, vitalisation and actuating of the thought form
Our focus in this section is on humanity and the building process. It is hoped that at some point the work will be conscious. When a human is consciously creating, s/he proceeds more slowly and focuses on the following before the creative process can be carried through. 1) Contact the Ego or Solar Angel; 2) Assure conformity with evolutionary law with knowledge of the creation process. These two are preparatory and aided by meditation. When s/he is expert in that process, creation moves more quickly. TCF 968
Building begins when the Ego has received recognition from the physical brain of man. Man’s physical centres are receptive to the influence of the force centres. Three parts are involved and interact with each other. The building process can be unconscious or conscious. Conscious creation is accomplished through a) organized thought, b) concentration and c) meditation. Two factors are involved:
- Contact or communicate with the Ego or Solar Angel
- Study the creation process and conform to evolutionary law.
When Egoic intent is recognized in the physical brain, man begins to build the form for the idea. Initially the material is organized on the mental plane. The impulse is sustained by itself. On etheric levels of the physical plane, physical concretion takes place. The thought form begins to separate from its originator.
The originator works with it on mental, astral and etheric levels with the physical response automatic. The process includes the following:
- Holds the idea long enough for its registration in the physical brain. When the communication between the Ego and human is clear and the process does not need repetition and is facilitated. The Tibetan in Treatise on Cosmic Fire characterizes this as reciprocal interplay with the two keyed or tuned to each other. The idea is conceived.
- Gestation occurs with the idea being pondered in mental matter. At this point, the creator uses his/her imagination to fill in the details of the idea. When the impulse is strong and the imagination vivid, the next stage begins.
- Vitalization by desire occurs the interplay of mental impulse and desire produce a pulsation in the organizing form of the idea.
- At a later point when the thought form is clothed in mental matter and vitalized by desire, it takes on a layer of astral matter and now can function on both the mental and astral planes. The creator must balance the manasic and kamic elements.
- The next stage is physical matter assuming an etheric form. A motivating impulse will lead to its separation from the creator and it is sent out to assume 1) a dense form and 2) a separate existence. TCF 969-972
We now see the emergence of a thought form into a body of etheric matter. The creator is directing energy to the thought form. It is at this point that negative conditions can emerge when the energy is emanating from lower dimensions of the creator. Vitalization accelerates as energy is poured from the creator’s centres into the thought form. When it becomes magnetic the thought form can call responses from other thought forms.
The life cycle of the form has begun although it remains connected to its creator by an energetic substance. The link between the creator and the thought form is fostered and vitalized. When the work of the thought form is complete and its purpose served, the thought form disintegrates. TCF 975
The significance of sight is important because as long as the eye of the creator is on the creation it survives. This has been called the line of the eye and the light of his/her countenance. In meditation the creator begins to use the third eye which is the organ of illumination, the unveiled eye of the soul and the organ through which the directing energy emanates and is sent into the Creator’s thought forms.
As long as the “Eye” is on the creation, force will be transmitted to it. When attention, or the Eye, is off the creation, it disintegrates. When the thought form/creation has been energized and complete, it can attain physical form. There are other factors involved and Treatise on Cosmic Fire can be consulted to identify them.
Occult significance of speech
Speech is a great magical force and adepts, or white magicians, through knowledge of energetic forces can produce results on the physical plane. There is a correlation between man’s development and the occult significance of his speech. Speech and sound communicate information. Most speech lacks focus and is ineffective. However, when influenced by soul impressions, speech becomes purposeful and powerful. Speech is a part of our identity as well as being a communicator on various levels. TCF 977
Talk from the lower astral levels is mostly about personality, life and emotion and increases the dense fog of glamour as well as thought forms that surround humans and limit consciousness. As humanity progresses along the path, its thoughts and consciousness are elevated to higher levels. Accompanying this is humanity knowledge about thoughts increases and speech become more meaningful.
On even higher levels speech begins to decrease in importance as intuitive and telepathic forms increase in use. The energy of thought is used for unselfish purposes and to help humanity realize the Plan. Idle words, selfish words and words of hate will not exist in higher planes of consciousness.
Religious scriptures emphasize creation by sound. The Christian Bible writes of the WORD as the SON, the CHRIST. In Hindu scriptures Vishnu, the VOICE, sings. Even the Solar Logos must keep sounding the note of love-wisdom until perfection is reached in the third solar system. It is said that a name has power. Mantras are the language of the gods.
- The Nature of Magic
Magic is a divine science which leads to a
participation in the attributes of divinity itself.8)
Magic is a vast subject and is of great importance for occultists. Mastering the significance of magic for occultists will result in the inclusion into the Brothers of Magic. To qualify as a magician, one must be mentally sensitive to impressions from the will of the soul and must maintain utter tranquility of the astral plane. Only to those who are ready will the transmission of sound and speech on the etheric/physical plane be taught under the Rules of Magic. TCF 982-4
Types of Magicians
There are two types of magicians, i.e. white magicians and black magicians. Motive and method differ between them. Subject matter on the two types exists and will not be addressed in this paper other than to encourage the reader to learn more through the TCF, TWM and GAP. The following offers a few differences.
White magician uses the energy of the Solar Angel, works through the Deva Builders, through sound and number, in cooperation with others, and cooperates with the Hierarchy and the Plan.
Black magician uses the energy of the lunar lords, ever works alone and on the astral and physical levels, and does not cooperate with the Hierarchical Plan.
Conditions for white magic include pure motives, clean bodies, high aspirations, plus devotion to the cause of understanding the nature of humans. Raising the vibration of the physical level will be fostered by qualities of abstinence, continence, clean living, proper diet, rigid self-control. These enable the Solar Angel to use the fires purposefully.
Rules for Magic
The 15 Rules for Magic are esoteric in nature. They describe a gradual process of increased understanding of glamour and illusion. The Rules are found in both Treatises on Cosmic Fire and White Magic. The focus of this paper has primarily been on Cosmic Fire and the Rules are found in TCF 996+. Dangers inherent in magic have influenced the Rules to be perplexing and confusing. Contained within these Rules is hidden information to enable humans to raise their consciousness. Three types of Rules and their plane of function are:
1st group Rules 1-6 mental place
2nd group Rules 7-11 astral plane
3rd group Rules 12-15 physical plane
The first six rules are directed to the proper use of the thinking instrument, the mind, in the magical process. In this first set of rules, the would-be magician is given an understanding of the means by which the soul seeks to communicate with the human mind, and how to minimize the distortions (illusions) that often emerge in this process. TCF 996-997 Rules 7 through 15 address more advanced states of magic. The Rules, without explanation, are as follows:
RULE ONE
The Solar Angel collects himself, scatters not his force but, in meditation deep,
communicates with his reflection.
RULE TWO
When the shadow hath responded, in meditation deep the work proceedeth.
The lower light is thrown upward; the greater light illuminates the three,
and the work of the four proceedeth.
RULE THREE
The Energy circulates. The point of light, the product of the labors of the four,
waxeth and groweth. The myriads gather round its glowing warmth
until its light recedes. Its fire grows dim. Then shall the second sound go forth.
RULE FOUR
Sound, light, vibration, and the form blend and merge, and thus the work is one. It proceedeth under the law, and naught can hinder now the work from going forward. The man breathes deeply. He concentrates his forces, and drives the thought-form from him.
RULE FIVE
Three things engage the Solar Angel before the sheath created passes downward;
the condition of the waters, the safety of the one who thus creates, and steady contemplation.
Thus are the heart, the throat, and eye, allied for triple service.
RULE SIX
The devas of the lower four feel the force when the eye opens;
they are driven forth and lose their master.
RULE SEVEN
The dual forces on the plane whereon the vital power must be
sought are seen; the two paths face the Solar Angel; the poles
vibrate. A choice confronts the one who meditates.
RULE EIGHT
The Agnisuryans respond to the sound. The waters ebb and flow. Let the magician
guard himself from drowning at the point where land and water meet. T
he midway spot, which is neither dry nor wet, must provide the
standing place where on his feet are set. When water,
land and air meet, there is the place for magic to be wrought.
RULE NINE
Condensation next ensues. The fire and waters meet, the form swells
and grows. Let the magician set his form upon the proper path.
RULE TEN
As the waters bathe the form created, they are absorbed and used.
The form increases in its strength; let the magician thus continue
until the work suffices. Let the outer builders cease their labors
then, and let the inner workers enter on their cycle.
RULE ELEVEN
Three things the worker with the law must now accomplish. First,
ascertain the formula which will confine the lives within the ensphering
wall; next, pronounce the words which will tell them what to do and
where to carry that which has been made; and finally, utter
forth the mystic phrase which will save him from their work.
RULE TWELVE
The web pulsates. It contracts and expands. Let the magician seize
the midway point and thus release those “prisoners of the planet”
whose note is right and justly tuned to that which must be made.
RULE THIRTEEN
The magician must recognize the four; note in his work the shade of
violet they evidence, and thus construct the shadow. When this is so,
the shadow clothes itself, and the four become the seven
RULE FOURTEEN
The sound swells out. The hour of danger to the soul courageous draweth near.
The waters have not hurt the white creator and naught could drown nor
drench him. Danger from fire and flame menaces now, and dimly yet the rising
smoke is seen. Let him again, after the cycle of peace, call on the Solar Angel.
Summary – The Nature of Magic
We have reviewed, in a broad and general manner, the process of thought form building. The planes in the Constitution of Man are integral to understanding the process. The mental plane determines the purpose, clarifies the idea, purifies the motive and builds the blueprint. The astral plane checks the motive again while vitalizing the thought form. Proper balance must exist between head and heart, mind and desire. Adding the fire of matter of a certain type completes the process along with final checks of purpose, idea, motive, vitality and appropriateness of form.
White magic is concerned with the unfoldment of the soul in form and its gaining needed experience thereby. It is not concerned with direct work upon the form but with the indirect influence of the soul, functioning in any form in every kingdom in nature as it brings the form under its control, thereby effecting needed and developing changes in the apparatus of contact. The white magician knows that when the proper and correct ray stimulation is applied to the centre which we call the soul in any form but not to the form itself, that then the soul, thus stimulated, will do its own work of destruction, of attraction, of rebuilding and of a consequent renewed life manifestation.
This is true of the soul of man, of the soul of a nation and of the soul of humanity itself. Bear this in mind, because what has been stated is a basic and fundamental rule by which all white magic is governed. DN 100, 121-123 The Rules reveal the depth in the magical process and require increased comprehension to fully understand the results unveiled in them. Our review of thoughts and thought forms has been brief and did not include the depth of topics addressed in the Rules. There remains a great deal to learn and, when we truly understand and appreciate the entire process, we will know magic.
The worker in magic produces a synthesis upon the physical plane of the energies by concretizing them. The energy thus employed will, in the majority of cases, be of three kinds:
1. The energy of the mind. This will be the dominant controlling energy used during the period of accepted discipleship and until the second initiation.
2. The energy of the soul. This will be wielded, used and creatively employed from the second until the third initiation.
3. The energy of soul and mind, blended and synthesised. This combination is of tremendous potency.
This energy synthesis proceeds until after the fourth initiation when it will be augmented by energy coming from the Monad. DN 129
Conclusion
There is one informing life as a centre of energy, pervading and uniting all within the divine flow. Man is essentially and inherently divine, and the soul, the centre of consciousness, the result of the pervasive union of Spirit with matter, is the means whereby man a) evolves a consciousness of divinity and unity, b) redeems the gross matter of his vehicles and c) liberates the pure flame of life energy from the limitation of form. The following statements conveyed in Isis Unveiled offer illumination about magic and its importance in the evolution of the soul:
- The object of the art of magic is the perfection of man.
- Magic is based on the inner powers in man’s soul.
- Magic is occult psychology.
Throughout this review, consciousness has been a theme as energy through fire produces the magic of thoughts and thought forms. The connection of fire, energy and magic produces results that, when contemplated upon, can move humanity’s evolution into higher dimensions of consciousness.
The soul is the vital link between God and man. Instructions from the higher dimensions are sent to the soul and the soul receives and transfers the messages to humanity. As humanity learns to recognize the messages and respond to them with thought forms, the result is higher dimensional energy penetrating into humanity’s planes of consciousness. As humans grasp the fundamental facts of energy and appreciate their position as creator, then humans will come into their divine right and the human kingdom will fulfill its function.
